It's a fun story - there are days when all I need is a good story.
Thanks for sharing - there's enough bad news out there.

As a cat owner and rescuer, I have to agree its a good article. Since most "news" is usually negative, its nice to read something enlightening.

When I started reading the article, I thought it was referring to that hardcore machine that drives up and down the mountain during any weather.

For those who are members of the Mount Washington Observatory and receive the "Windswept" publication, this is newsworthy. My wife and I received red-carpet treatment at the Obs. a week before the summit station was open to tourists in May 2004. We were given a personal tour of the entire grounds and observation center which included a sighting of Nin. Even though the weather was far from perfect, the visit was a highlight of my honeymoon, thanks to my wonderful wife.:sun

Drivel...Read the first sentence on the link and closed the page... I thought it might be about the people mover too (which would be much more interesting).

For people interested in Mt Washington and the Whites, cats in the Observatory have been a decades old tradition. Most live long, long lives up there on top of the mtn, and many have been the kittens of other aged cats from the summit. So, for some around the area, it's quite newsworthy when the summit cat retires and heads down the mtn. There is even at least one book written about a summit cat, which I found pretty neat.

Yeah, and Marty on the Mountain was just another weatherman.

It's okay. We don't expect flatlanders to understand. ;)

What's so enlightening about an old cat being retired. Remember, I, and even you, are likely to be old someday. Would you like to compete with a cat, that only harrassed hikers, never joined them?

4eyedbuzzard-"Yeah, and Marty on the Mountain was just another weatherman." Actually, if you watch this broadcast of Marty's last day on the summit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNATQANryFc), you'll hear him say he was not a weatherman. He got his weather from the Mount Washington Observatory where I worked. Marty was a hell of a nice guy and everyone at the observatory would drop what they were doing to watch his nightly broadcast on TV even though he was only a few hundred feet away.

As for Nin, he got more mail and gifts than the other people at the Observatory. Nin was the only full time resident on the summit for about 15 years.

I am glad OF weighed in.

Why would a bunch of guys name a cat after a female author? Especially since it was a tomcat.

And why would a bunch of men be interested in reading feminist literature on a lonely outpost anyway?

Just wondering.

Lone Wolf-"I assumed it was named after Nine Inch Nails. guess all the men up there are gay"Sorry to spoil your homophobic wet dream, but when I was working there, over half the winter summit crew were women.:D

And maybe you ought to check what Nin wrote about.

Some people on the forum might take the bolded statement as an attack against gay people, which in today's world is a very contentious political issue for a lot of people, IMO.

That would be communist, of course. The cat should spend its remaining years as a greeter at Wal-Mart.
