Anyone have unusually good or bad luck using Sprint system phone while hiking the AT?

When I was in the 100 mile wilderness, I got a signal at the shelter 15 miles in, and at Antlers campsite, those were the only places for me.

I got two calls on my nextel on top of Springer two weeks ago. Then got another call at Cooper Gap the same day. It was worthless back in the spring between Neels and Hogpen Gap. It does work right in the parking lot of Mountain Crossings from time to time. But make your convo fast or you'll lose out fast.

My work phone is Sprint. It sucks in the mountains I have tried it in. That covers from Springer to Damascus if that is any help.
