I wasn't suggest a thru-hiker carry the entire trail.... Being a computer geek, I like to scan the maps and print them as needed... much lighter, smaller and easier to replace. Plus, I can squeeze an entire map on a couple pages that certainly is lighter than the entire map. I almost always wind up giving them away to someone on my last day who doesn't have a map.

p.s. printer ink is free at work ;)

This is one of the reasons I loved having the ALDHA guide for my section hikes. I could just print the sections I needed and save a lot of weight. Printing the PDFs on a laser printer, double-sided... very efficient.

yes.... I usually copy the mileage chart from there and stick it in a corner of the map. On a laser printer that works great.... but you probably wouldn't want a color topo map printed in B/W.

I haven't had much luck yet with electronic reproduction of topo maps. The contour lines crowd together so that the final result is unreadable. This has been an issue for my upcoming PCT section. There's no equivalent to the ATC maps for the section I'm doing.

Have you tried a finer quality printer? Or maybe just order a set of topo maps online someplace like this?

It's not the quality of the printer; it's that the contour intervals jam together if you print at less than 1:1. I haven't checked out the original USGS maps, though.
