I was in Iquitos about 15 years ago for 3 months. Still looks the same. Nice place.

I've done several backpacking trips into the jungles of Panama in 1972-73 around the Los Crucis rain forest. Me and a buddy took a canal zone bus thru Gatun/Gamboa and hit the humid trailhead where we kept careful eyeballs peeled for the large bushmaster snakes. And we carried a rappel rope since we travelled for the most part in creek beds and had to lower ourselves down high waterfalls, etc.

Great trips, bugs were bad, leeches were bad. Give me a high open bald in a blizzard any day.:)

I'm with you. I enjoy the forests in New England so much more when the chill drives the mosquitoes away.

However, I will retain a romanticized version of my memories of those places in the world where food drops out trees and litters the ground.

And where if you lean up against a tree you'll be covered in ants in about 60 seconds. OR if you lean up against a Black Palm, you'll wish you DID NOT!:)

Here is my last trip. Fanatic Fringe is making me a custom pack half the size of the Alpine Trail for my next trip.

i was wandering around in the jungle of guatamala back in 1981 when i saw some movement up ahead. i stopped to try and make out what it was. mmmm.... there were some people up there, as they became more visible i saw that they all had guns! they approached me asked me where i was going,i told them for a walk, they said turn around, i did, and that was that. i'll never forget it.i returned into mexico via the rio de la passion and the rio usamacinta. great trip!
