Just received some Titanium Goat carbon fiber tent stakes (http://www.titaniumgoat.com/stakes.html) in the mail today. Man, these things are realy nice. Weight is .20 oz. each. They definitely aren't the cheapest but I sure do like carbon fiber. I ordered two sets of them.

They look like carbon arrow shafts without the nock glued on. Glue an insert on the other end, screw in a machine screw with a washer and voila...lightweight stake!

How strong are they? Will they break when you use them?

Carbon Fiber is pretty damn strong. I don't see these breaking at all. From their website - "These things really work, while the nylon head typically won't hold up to this, we've driven them into frozen ground with a sledge hammer. "

Most folks won't be using a sledge hammer though. :)

But not all carbon fiber tubes are equal. I forget the two processes, but one of them, they use to make things like cheap kite poles and basically the carbon fiber is just exuded in tube form. In the other process--the one they use to make things like golf club shafts--the carbon fiber is twisted and relayered upon itself to increase strength. Both are probably strong enough to make tent stakes, but you can step on the cheaper kind of carbon fiber tube and it will crush; when you step on the stronger kind, it doesn't break.

I've tried taking these and snapping them in half with my hands, they won't budge. :)
