View Full Version : Silnylon, where to buy?
Need advice as to where to buy sheets of silnylon.
My plan is to cover the Hennessy Hammock Under Cover.
As is, it is quite fragile and susceptible to tearing and absorbing moisture.
I believe that covering both sides of the Undercover would result in a much more durable piece of equipment.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Plenty o' places. There are plenty of links at Just Jeff's site (http://www.tothewoods.net/JeffsHikingPage.html). Also, check with Ed Speer at Speer Hammocks, he usually has sil in stock for fairly cheap, usually gray or black. Another place is Wal-Mart. If your local Wally World has a sewing department, check the $1 bin very closely. I scored 23 yards of gray sil at the one near me before Christmas. :D Good luck in your hunt.

You Knaves! I've been looking for two years with no luck! I've found DWR but no sil.

No luck for me either:(.
Recently 22 yds of gray and 8 yds of O.D. green. At walmart. Only in the dollar bin.

Walmart sil nylon is like the Bigfoot of fabrics :( I've never experienced a first-hand sighting!

Durable Water Repellant Well which is it?
hammock engineer 02-26-2008, 16:05 Walmart is very hit or miss. I never saw sil, but scored a lot of DWR.
Check out www.speerhammocks.com (http://www.speerhammocks.com) . Ed sells sil at a decent price.
kytrailman 02-28-2008, 09:36 Take a knee- I looked at all of the super wal-mart in my area with no luck. I went to one of the old regular wally worlds and walked straight to it. good luck.
aaroniguana 02-28-2008, 09:44 I hit every Wally World in Central MD (6 of them) once a week until I found two 5 yard pieces of smoke gray. With the scraps I'm making some waterproof mittens and small sacks. Also found 12 yards of Urethane coated OD that I'm using for a tarptent floor, plenty leftover which I'll probably sell very cheap here when it's done. And I have several large pieces of uncoated safety orange, gray, OD and white for stuff sacks and the like. Plus some Dacron which made a nice new jib for my sailboat.
The only part of being semi-ambulatory is that you have lots of time to sit at the sewing machine.
aaroniguana 02-28-2008, 09:45 Make that only GOOD part...
Stitch_and_Figgy 02-28-2008, 20:11 I made most of our gear for our 2007 thru-hike. I've been happy with the fabrics purchased here:
The Rain Shed (http://www.therainshed.com/)
Seattle Fabrics (http://www.seattlefabrics.com/)
Denver Fabrics (http://www.denverfabrics.com/)
Quest Outfitters (http://www.questoutfitters.com/sale%20coated.htm)
And one more option that I haven't tried.
Silk-ienne (http://www.americanhomeandhabitat.com/products/Silk-iene%20Silicone%20Coated%20Nylon%20Ripstop.htm)
Good luck with your project.
Nearly Normal 02-29-2008, 19:51 I bought some here.

The material I spoke of earlier in this thread turned out to actually be DWR, not silnylon.
