This project was brought on by another Whiteblazer, He was asking how he could lighten up his head lamp. The only real mod for this is to replace the stock one with a aftermarket band. So here it is:

Needed:
- Your headlamp, Mine is the Petzl - Tikka plus.
- needle and heavy weight thread - $2.50
- Braided elastic, 3/8" from Walmart - $2.00
- Small 3/8" cat collar (you need the small adjment peice) - $3.50
- Scissors
- small amount of super glue - (opt.) - $1.50

This is what you start out with:

A) Cut off the original band and then take the new Elastic band and cut it
about 2" longer then the original. Burn the ends a little for they dont unravel.
B) Take the cat collar and cut off the little plastic adj. part. Throw the rest away.

C) Take one end of the elastic cord and wrap it through the middle brace,
then sew the end to itself as in the photo:

D) Wrap the end through one side of your lamp, then run the elastic cord
through the adjuster and around the other side of the lamp.

E) Sew the open end to itself. I over wrapped the ends about 3/4" and ran the thread around the outside edge. If you want to add a drop of super glue at the knots you tied in the thread.

This is the end result:

So for about 30 minutes of work and a total of $10.00, you can do this :D !

End result for all the above:
Original weight - 2.70 Ounce
Modified weight - 2.35 Ounce

Weight savings - .35 Ounce

Other benifit is the headlamp takes up a lot less room, more room for other junk! :D

10 bucks for 10 grams? A dollar per gram saved? At that rate you will spend 454 dollars to loose one pound. Wow. Your base weight must be SUL already.

Thanks alot, that came out awesome! I'm definetly tackling that task whenever I get some more free time.

As for the price, its not bad. I would have to guess that the average person has a sewing needle and some thread in their house along with super glue. That only leaves the elastic and the cat collar to buy. That drops the price down to $5.50.

Cuffs, don't get me wrong, the e-light is a nice design but I wouldn't put it on the same level as a Tikka + .

Thanks for posting the picture of the e-light though. I wonder if I could use the strap off of that?

Nice modification! If your not in a hurry to make it you may be able to have the crafts department manager order those adjustment tabs for you instead of buying a colar for just that.

I just did this because 88BLUEGT was asking about how to do it.

Plus it gave me something to do. :D

The main advantage is the lamp packs smaller without all that bulky strap that came stock on it.
