What's a good light wide-mouth bottle to use with a Steripen? I hate the thought of going back to Nalgene. I hike with a platy bag & gatorade bottle these days. Just picked up a Steripen... wondering how to "integrate" it with the rest of the kit. :-?

I interested in what others think to as I have been considering purchasing a Steripen but don't want to use it with a Nalgene Bottle.

what's wrong with a 1 qt. Nalgene? it's perfect

The Steripen balances perfect on top of a 32oz Gatorade bottle. It is my standard set. You can just "rotate" the Steripen around with the tip of your finger.

It's at least 4 oz. of unnecessary weight, and that's with the old-style polypropylene Nalgene. The new shiny ones are 6 oz. Gatorade bottle is under 1 oz.

We used a steripen for our thru-hike, we just used the bottle that came with the pen. It worked fine. We also met hikers that used the pen in their bladder without problems. Really any bottle will work as long as you agitate the bottle while the light is one. Besure to take batteries and change them when the light begins to fade or take longer than normal to fully light. We also prefiltered the water with a piece of cloth, but others used a piece of panty hose, which we will do next time. The steripen worked very well for us and we will use it again on our next trip.

What is your data source?? My scale is a couple years old, so it may have drifted a little, but it shows:
Gatorade (1qt): 1.7 oz
Gatorade Endurance (1 L): 2.2 oz
Old Clear Polycarbonate Nalgene (1L): 5.1 oz

I love to complain about big bad manufactureres giving missleading weights (especially tents), but it looks like "everybody does it"

Well, maybe. But quite a bit less dead weight than my filter. :D

Pork brains in milk gravy, if still made, are dead weight.

I also use the 32oz. Gatorade bottles with the SteriPen; no problems.

It's been a while since I measured my Nalgenes, and my ancient polypro Nalgene has since been trashed. Losing the Nalgenes (I used to carry three) was the easiest weight loss of all... it would be sad & stupid to undo that. It's possible that the 1 liter Gatorade bottle is more than 1 oz. I think the one I've been using isn't quite 1 liter.

I haven't considering changing from the pump method, but I can see from the steripen website how this could be a good idea...

"It is also worth noting that SteriPEN’s™ speed and ease of operation makes it useful in places where filters and chemicals are inappropriate such as restaurants and cafes."

Good idea because:

a) I am tired of holding the water glasses under the table to hide the fact I don't trust the cafe's water. However, this has caused more than one observer to mistake my arm movement for something else.

b) I was consider aquamira, but I wouldn't want someone to think I was trying to date rape my hiking partner, who happens to be my brother.

I don't know about being discreet in a restaurant; those things will light-up a dim room. They are really bright in a glass of water. No doubt you'll attract attention, but at least your 'movements' won't be misunderstood. :D

One thing to keep in mind if using a Steripen, you must have a way of getting the water in the bottle, leaves are great, a cup works, but they aren't as easy as the pump filter. Last year was dry and sometimes this was a challenge. We carried a cut off old water bottle to use as a scope, but all these things add up weight wise, however still less than our pump.

I use the plastic scoop from the Tide detergent box as a water scoop. It weighs about 0.2 oz

Plus, it leaves your teeth shiny white and gives you Spring-like breath. :D

Wolf, I guess you are right. I have carried all kinds of filters and almost never use them.

How about a 1liter widemouth Nalgene Canteen? I use them for my hydration system and they are durable, plus they weigh just a hair over 2 ounces.

You could use a cooking pot if it is keep it clean enough, and has the necessary vol. I use a freezer ziplock and sometimes set it up in my 0.9 l. pot. It becomes easy to estimate volume; try it at home.

Yes, lose the Nalgenes. I complained about the exageration of weight savings but it is a significant savings none the less. 2L soda bottles are probably the best weight/vol but you need at least one additional bottle with a larger mouth. I carry a platy (w/o a tube) but rarely use it outside camp.

So, some say you can use a Steripen with a gatorade bottle. Terripin, were you able to get a Gatorade bottle to work??

I've only had the silly Steripen for about 24 hours so far, and obviously not hiked with it yet. Ditching the filter creates a new dilemma: how to fill the Platy. Obviously not "impossible" but with the filter it was wicked simple -- just pump water into the bag through the hose.

I already have a "light plastic cup" in my kit, but it generally travels inside my cooking pot, and that's buried at the bottom of my pack. Funny how any change to the kit creates a ripple effect...

Using my scale I weighed:
- 1L hard Nalgene at about 5 oz
- 1L Platypus at about 1 oz, I think it's listed as less than that even.
- 1L Nalgene widemouth collapsible cantene at 2 oz

I use a steripen and finaly bought the 1L wide mouth collapsible Nalgene... REI has them for sure, probably could find elsewhere and online.

It's about 1 oz heavier than the Platypus unfortunatly, but I don't trust the steripen to work with the Platypus corrrectly... and I prefer this to any other water treatment method.

My 2 cents: I have been using A steripen adventurer for almost a year now. I carry a 16 and a 30 platty. But on the outside of my pack I carry my Fairshare Mug it holds 32oz. I just scoop up the water do my 90 plus seconds and the fill my plattys.
