When my daughter was in Marine Corps Junior ROTC in high school, we got to see the 8th & I Corps perform. All I got to say is AWSOME!
RemovedFirst off, those Marines, the US Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon (http://www.mbw.usmc.mil/sdpdefault.asp), aren't dancing, they're performing a drill sequence that is memorized and done completely without commands, verbal or otherwise. It shows a great deal of discipline, commitment and strength to do what those Hard Chargers do. They travel the country and the world performing for thousands of people each year. The uniform they wear is 100% wool and is worn year round, regardless of temperature. The rifle they carry is an M-1 Garand, which is tipped with a chrome plated bayonet and weighs in at about 10.5 lbs, making it not particularly easy to maneuver in the manner that they do. Drill is one of the things that we Marines learn in recruit training ("boot camp") and is emphasized constantly by out Drill Instructors. Drill is at the very heart of discipline for every single Marine. One needn't be a Marine to appreciate what these Devil Dogs do.

Given that the thread is to remember a marine who shared one of our passions I think that you might have given more thought to your wording. (Please feel free to flame me off-line if you wish)
Patriotism is sometimes almost a dirty word in the UK with bleeding heart liberals holding centre stage. Members of the forces do not seek to question and criticise, they go and do their job whenever they are asked to do - and do it well.
My hat's off to every single member of our military personnel in whatever capacity they serve.

When Curtis Alan Christensen Jr., formerly of Collingswood, started his hike on the Appalachian Trail a few years ago, he spurned the notion of beginning the trail at a tourist attraction in Georgia.
Above is the first paragraph from the newspaper story....does anyone know what this "tourist attraction" is?

Semper Fi brother. I hope he was a WhiteBlazer at some point. To be associated with that kind of person is an honor.

RemovedIt's a Marine thing, you obviously don't and never will understand. If you've earned the title, it all makes sense to you. It's a same that you can't appreciate the discipline of the men and women who keep you safe and free day after day as you go along obviously taking that for granted. I apoligize to my brothers and sisters in arm for the ignorant comments of terrapin and A-Train. One has to wonder where knuckleheads like these come from.

Liberal, moderate or conservative, it doesn't take any political view to appreciate the hard work and sacrifices that our men and women in uniform make every single day for us. If one doesn't like the war we're in, then talk to your civilian leadership about that, they are the ones responsible. Period. The proud Marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen of our armed services are doing the job they were sworn to and no one should let their political views cloud that. They sweat, bleed and cry for us every single day. Appreciate that, no matter who you are or what you believe. As a matter of fact, do someone a favor today. Find a serviceman or a veteran and thank them for that they do or have done to keep us all a free nation. I'm sure they'll appreciate it and I'm also sure you'll fell pretty doggone good about it.

That is what their honor is.

And don't ever raise that point, if you disagree, with a member of the military. What they say to each other, or even to us, is for us to - at most - listen to. They have a right to discuss things that is different than ours.
The proud Marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen of our armed services are doing the job they were sworn to and no one should let their political views cloud that.
Don't leave out the Coast Guards, either. They protect us at home and even in Iraq, too.

does anyone know the year or years he hiked? He looks so familar.
Wow, I'm sorry people took offense to my comments. They weren't meant to be offense or "snotty". I also meant no disrespect to the family of the Marine. As many of you know threads cascade and don't always stay 100% on topic from the original intended point. I was simply asking a question based on a video LW posted the link to (which I seemed to think was not for the man who died, but simply a Marine thing.
This is why I wrote "no disrespect" and thought it was clear I didn't understand the point or reason to the ritual, but thanks to those who answered my question. I think folks are a little knee-jerky to read into every comment on here, but I do APOLOGIZE if I have offended you.
I've lost a cousin in Iraq who was over there fighting, and I've never said I don't appreciate the efforts of those abroad (even if my politics may suggest otherwise).
K, let's try this again.
The thread was started to pay tribute to a man who served the country and loved to hike, specifically the AT.
Despite whatever tangents were introduced to the thread, the purpose was to identify, remember and honor an honorable guy.
I'm sorry that my comments suggested otherwise. I was wrong.
I should be remembering and celebrating this man's honor, as a fellow hiker and countryman. It shouldn't have gone in any other direction.
Also my thoughts and prayers go out to his family, who should be very proud during this time of loss.

It takes a big person to admit when you're wrong, you've earned my respect. LW is right, it's hard for non-Marines to understand how we feel about our Corps. Fanatical? Not quite? Proud? You bet your ass! As Ronald Reagan once said:
"Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they've made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem."

I think most of the discourse actually came from those that really don't get it. Your a good man ATrain.Exactly, just a simple misunderstanding.
