Well, I'm 24 and 5 foot 10 and wore a women's medium Marmot Precip jacket and pants in the rainy/windy/cold weather and decided that no matter WHAT a compnay says, there is no such thing as waterproof AND breathable. If it's breathing, you're gettin' wet, and if it's waterproof, it's not breathing. I found that the Precip was comfortable for the most part, (moreso than the Frogg Toggs I tried on) and ligthweight, and kept the rain out when it was a mild rain. Downpours were downpours, and they did a terrifc job of keeping you warm in the wind and as an extra layer against the cold. Just my two cents...

I just had the chance to try mine out. This was highly recommended on some other sites. My first concern was the breathability of the material. It did very well, no sweating like a pig inside. It has large zippered slits in the arm pits that I used to poke my arms out of, since it was hot outside anyway. It has a hood that's adjustable two ways, by the normal draw line that they made so you that you can't pull one end into the sleeve, and it has a velcrow tab on top that you can use to pull it back in case you have a small head. The velcrow tab is supposed to be used to roll the hood up but I haven't figured that out. Two zippered pockets on the front that are lined with netting, when left opened they help venting. The main zipper on the front is covered by a wind flap, as is the pockets. The main zipper also has velcrow closures. I'm not sure what Marmot claims it weighs, using my unscientific fish scale, it weighs 8 oz. I found it on line on sale for $79, normally sales for $99. This is what the label says. "Shell: Rip Tide N-170R with PreCip(TM) Technology Waterproof/Breathable DriClime(R)lined chin guard.Attached hood rolls up and is secured with Velco(R)hood tab. Angel-wing movement(TM). Elatic drawcord hem. Double storm flap over zipper with snap/Velcrow(R). It worked great.

I used a precip jacket the entire way. It was pretty beat up by Maine, but it is a great rain jacket. Totally agree w/Jumpstart's comments....except for one thing. I never got wet in a total downpour until Maine. I contacted Marmot about this and they said to wash it in Revivex, and if that didn't work they would replace it.
The only time I hike in rain gear in the rain is if its cold and windy, other than that I just get wet. But I had a lot of cold and windy in the beginning and at the end.

I am in the market to get a lighter jacket and when I posted my gear list, the precip and the redledge were recommended.. Right now I have a Lowe Alpine ( triple ceramic ) which is a GREAT jacket but it weights 30 ounces ( 1.86 lbs) I went to the gear store today and looked at the redledge and the precip jackets and I liked them both. The AT thru hiker that was there working STRONGLY suggested I go with the precip... was he just telling me that to make a bigger sale or is it that much better of a jacket?

I read the reviews online and most said that the jacket was good in a drizzle but in a good rain it soaked through...

What do you all think of it?

THanks Sparky!

Sparky.. I looked at both the Red Ledge and the Precip. Went with the Precip. I liked the fit and construction of the Precip better. IMHO.. in a good rain just about any jacket will soak through.

Just got back from Blood mountain yesterday and hiked in pouring rain the entire time in the marmot precip jacket and pants and never got wet.....have used them on numerous occasions with great regards. I agree with Jumpstart that if a product performs that well in the rain it is not completely breathable as I get hot very quickly but that is a great resource around camp and on the exposed ridges as protection.

In the summer just get wet and dry out!

I have used my precip by Marmot for almost three years and think it is fantastic. I make a habit of going a lot of times when it is raining and enjoy it very much. Very breathable and you have to make sure not to let just starting out make you put on to much under it so you get hot once you have hiked a ways. I think a lot of hikers put on to much gear and then do not want to stop and take it off and then maybe blame the pre-cip gear for it. This is serious gear that is absolutely great. I love the Marmot gear all around.

I've got the Red Ledge jacket and only have been out in it a few times in the rain. However, I can say that despite being a good jacket it seems to sweat inside even on short trips (5 miles or less) on cold days, but I haven't tried the Precip. Right now I kind of wish I had, based on these entries alone.

I had a Red Ledge and retired it for a Marmot Precip. Don't recall teh model but the Red Ledge was on the low end of their product line. The Red Ledge was fine but did not have pit zips and did not breath particularly well...I liked the fit and added protection of the Marmot a lot more... I keep the Red Ledge in the trunk of my car for unexpected weather.

Sparky,

30 ounces is probably at least double what you should be carrying for a rain jacket. Think about it. For about $100, you can reduce your pack weight by about a pound. It sounds like a "no-brainer" to me. I sure follow the saleman's advice. If not to the Precip, then to something that is lighter in any event. But, I haven't heard anything negative about the Precip, so I'm sure that is a good choice.

For what it's worth, I'm seriously contemplating buying a Precip myself to replace a heavier goretex rain jacket, even though I will not reduce my weight nearly as much.

Well, I ordered my Precip today.. I dipped into my tent fund to order it. I got a good deal too, $79.95 at Campmor.... I will be wearing it here at the end of the month when I go out for a weekend.

I'm currently hiking in the holyoke and berkshire ranges of massachusetts with a $0.89 2oz Walmart Poncho. My LL Bean Gore-Tex Pac-Lite and TNF Gore-Tex XCR jackets are sitting in the corner of my room rotting.

I got mine at Campmor as well it was around $79.00. I have yet to get it wet but it really does breath well. I dont sweat at all in it, which was a big difference from my older cheap rain gear. The marmot precip is money well spent.

FYI....Marmot introduced three new rain jackets this year that use PreCip technology -- the Meteor, the Phoenix, and the Oracle...see Marmot.Com for information
