View Full Version : Tyvek? Could it be done?
I was thinking of using some Tyvek home wrap to try to build my hammock. Also thinking of trying a cat tarp as well. This stuff comes in like 12' x 50' rolls. Has anyone ever thought of using it.
We use it as ground cloth under a tent, with no problems.
Made a rain suit out of some last year works great.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hammocks need to be made from breathable material IME, but I would think a catenary-cut tarp could be done using Tyvek.

Search the threads, many already use it as a ground cloth. I utilize it as a vapor barrier when sleepin in shelters....

If the type of Tyvek you pick could endure your weight...I don't see why not.
There are many different types of Tyvek...
including the kind Kites are made of.

This link explains a few of them in great detail.
Have fun...either way Hammock hanging is a tad above the rest!:D

Maybe buy a cover and convert it to a hammock...
Protective covers manufactured with 100% DuPont™ TyvekŪ provide superior protection from harmful environmental conditions, are lightweight and exceptionally breathable, and strong, durable and long lasting.

there's a microperf soft sided tyvek (may be in the links above)

Yup (http://www.peak.org/~webdawg/DIYGear/TyvekTarp/index.html). It's been done. I have to second FD's notion about doing a Tyvek hammock, though. I think that a hammock should be made out of breathable material, otherwise you'll probably have a condensation issue.
I doubt that Tyvek would make a strong enough hammock, and nylon fabrics, at 2 oz./sq.yd. and less are probably lighter. It would probably get more breathable (and weaker) with use as a hammock. If you try it in your back yard and it doesn't work, you can tell others to skip the trouble.

Depends on if you were hell-bent on sewing it or simply doing the W-fold / wrap thing that a lot of DIY hammockers do. If the W-fold / wrap, all you do is cut a sheet to size and Tyvek is likely to be strong enough... If you're sewing webbing tie outs, not so much...
