Now that it looks like Robert Redford is going to make a movie about the AT, how can White Blaze go about promoting and/or drafting Baltimore Jack to be a recommend technical advisor?

At a minimum place names would be more likely to be correct and Jack would get a fat Hollywood paycheck. At best, I am sure his input could make for a better and funnier movie.

I think that's a great idea but they're only considering a feature lenth movie!

why jack? his hikes have been too "white bread". a more carefree blue-blaze type person would be better. i say Lion King.

i noticed the lion king has been posting the last few days..he must have some down time from making videos...i just hope they portray the AT as it is and not make it look as something it may not be..it would be nice to have interviews with some of the past thruhikers, section hikers or blue blazers..lets just wait and see..if redfords doing the movie im sure it will be produced well......

one giant picket line the length of the AT, or we organize an event in each AT trail state on the same day and time to promote trail unity. groups can gather at the nortern or southern state boundries then walk to the neiboring state whereupon the other group would be heading the opposite way and all would cross paths shake hands talk and then do what ever comes natural. there would be a group at every state border all at the same time now that would bring some good press to the AT.. unity speaks volumes.....

I think MS and Gatorgump would be the ideal people to be technical advisers. The reason: They have actually started (and finished) the hike without having had a lot of previous hiking experience and were not always well received by the community - in other words, they have a lot in common with Bryson & Katz..

If neither of them can do it (they both have lives and real jobs) then another candidate comes to mind - Miss Janet. While MJ doesn't hike as much as some, she definitely knows the hiking community - warts and all.

upon further thought and even though this is another useless thread, Weathercarrot would be the best technical advisor. he's done more AT hiking and maintaining and knows more about the trail than 99% of the people on this website. and my input would make for a better and funnier movie

Tarlin is well travelled. But Paul Newman he's not.

Why do you need a technical advisor when Bryson and Katz did just about everything wrong and knew nothing about what they were doing? Wouldn't it be better to let Redford, et al., just wing it?

i just hope they portray the AT as it is and not make it look as something it may not be.

Now that would be two hours of boredom. I'm hoping to see a few bear attacks, maybe a mountain lion stalking them for days, a few gun fights, sex, lots of sex.

Good Lord, what a weird thread.

Thanks to some for the kind words.

I'm not sure I'm really interested in this job, regardless of however qualified I might be. I hope to spend the spring and summer hiking, and the fall working for Senator McCain, assuming he's still in the race. Doesn't leave much time to do much else.

In retrospect, in terms of helping the production with information on good locations; giving advice on road access, especially for large production vehicles; suggesting facilities close to the Trail that would welcome and assist the Production; giving advice on how thru-hikers really talk; appear; dress; equip themselves, etc., well yeah, I'd probably be in a very good position to do all that. I could certainly do a good job trouble-shooting the script and red-lighting obvious errors, gaffes, etc.

In short, I probably WOULD be of some assistance to the production.

But at the moment, I'm not sure I'm interested, so I'm not about to apply for the job, and would prefer that nobody applies for me.

But thanx for the thought.

My vote is for Jack Tarlin !! If we can come to an Agreement, we need to get our suggestion to the " Redford Camp" My guess is that they're browsing around here now....I was contacted by a producer in NY for this movie about a part. His name was David Parlo.

He said they were going to be contacting about a dozen people to be in certain parts that he had to talk with.He had mentioned he wanted me to be in a scene with our bus and possibly the hiker bash.

He stated that if the plans went as planned they would be back in touch with me in this spring.

Has anyone else been contacted?

A movie version would only be funny if it was based on the book, and not about the trail. IMO< there are enough movies out there documenting the trail and thru hikers, I want this to be a comedy that follows the book, because I found the book to be quite funny. I would not go see it in movie theatures because I was interested in seeing a movie about the trail itself.

They could easily film the pre-hike scenes in Hanover.

Yeah, been in Denver for about 8 days (One in Boulder) had to fix a major financial problem and DVD situation (With a little help from an Angel Unnamed-but self described sexy) as I fired my business partner cold.

It aint easy doing this stuf on your own when you have to run it like a business and all your 'distrubution points' are scattered up and down the East coast, your're broke, work for yourself...blah blah blah blah blah....and youre in the middle of a hike/film/book writing thing and the temps are hovering around -2 average when you are actually hiking.

But good news! I am back on the trail tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank Frikkin God:banana, I've eaten half of Denver and my feet are going to hurt for about three days even though I've done at least 2-4 miles everyday to keep me from getting to lazy.
