View Full Version : Is anybody else still waiting for their thru hikers handbook?
I opted for a Southbound version, and won't get mine for several more months.

SC Ryan:
Instead of posting here at Whiteblaze and making the author/publisher of the book look bad, have you tried contacting him in person instead, in order to see what's going on?
This might accomplish more than simply posting and pouting here, and you could also share with us what you discover.
More productive, don't you think? :-?
I received mine several days ago.
Jack, its Friday, lighten up . I appreciate you trying to stick up for a friend. I only posted this publicly because I didn't have anyone specific to ask. Bob McCaw and I were communicating through email effectively until the last two weeks. He has been trying to contact me, and I him. It is obvious from his emails to me that he 1) does/did not have my address, and 2) has not been getting my responses which included my addy. I posted this to see if others were having the same trouble, not to drag his name in the mud. Bob, I'm sorry if the original post seemed negative, You're alright with me! :) I look forward to using this year's handbook.
Admin, you can change the title of this thread or remove it.

Heads up!
When you order over the internet using Paypal, it is possible to place an order and not include a valid shipping address. This can cause the person you order from considerable consternation! (And it's what happened here.)
Anyway, no harm, no foul. SC Ryan's book is in the mail.

Subject says it all! :(
Mine arrived two days ago! I pre-ordered it quite some time ago (as soon as TP came back up and it was offered).

And look who is offering advice about not posting and pouting. Amazing!

I don't use credit cards or paypal. Are check or money orders accepted?

Oh nevermind. I just saw this:
If you prefer to order the 2008 Handbook by mail, please send a check or money order
made payable to Bob McCaw in the amount of $22.50.
(Shipments to Canada or Mexico $4.50 extra. Shipments to other countries $6.50 extra.)
Make check or money order payable to and send your order to:

(Be sure to include your return address with your order)

Geez, this is silly.
A guy's book is overdue because the person who's supposd to ship it to him never had his address! :D
Seems to me that this would make it kinda hard for the author to put something out in the mail, no? Instead of accusing me of "jumping to conclusions" Mr. Ryan, you should probably apologize to Mr. McCaw and then let the matter go.
In any case, glad this is resolved.
And Warren Doyle, thanx for the completely uncalled for cheap shot.
You can always be counted on, that's fer sure.
Is there any information on when this guidebook might be in local stores (such as EMS)?
I know the 2008 Companion is not, and I don't know whether Appalachian Pages has any deal to be sold in stores.

Once again, I'd contact the authors/publishers, which is probably the most efficient way to get accurate information on matters such as this.
Orgered mine on line a few days ago - and it arrived today.
Thanks Bob - I look forward to putting it to go use.

The Thru-hiker's Handbook will be available very soon at most of the outfitters along the trail and quite a few independent outfitters elsewhere.
The "big boys" -- EMS, REI, Campmor, etc. -- have purchasing procedures that are not easy for a person in my position to deal with. I may or may not be successful in getting the book in their stores this year. In any event, the Handbook won't be in the big stores for at least another month.
I'm hoping to have wider distribution in the big stores next year.

I ordered mine via PayPal, and checked on Bob's website (trailplace.com) every so often in order to keep up with when it was shipping.
I am proud to say that mine showed up at my location here in a very nice USPS Priority Mail envelope.... I've checked out the book, and it's done very nice.
Bob, great product you have going there.... I'll put it to some good use this coming year....

Actually, the 2008 Companion from ALDHA is in my REI in Brentwood right now. I was surprised to see it out so soon. The 2008 AT Data Book is there also.
Personally, I've already ordered the Appalachian Pages just to see what they're like.
I've been walking down to EMS every other day to see if the 2008 Companion is there yet, but it has not been, I will check again later this afternoon.

Instead of trying as usual to get the last word, you should have read my apology in post 6 and let the matter go yourself. :)

Jack was a bit over the top, but - please, everyone, if you have heart disease don't read the following, since it might be too shocking for you - I agree with Jack that you came on too strong. You may not realize it, but there is a huge amount of history about the Handbook and "vaporware" publishing, and no small amount of controversy about how Dan Bruce issued it and when you threw your first post in, it was clearly negative in tone. Maybe an "Oops! Didn't realize I was throwing some gasoline on a slumbering fire!" type of apology would be appropriate.

Wasn't that just that one Year when the handbooks were late? And... Since it affected you, (mememe) isn't that the reason why you are so adamant about bringing this up year after year after year? Self absorbed SOB.
Drop it and give the new guy a chance, weasy. Sheeesh!

Geez, people, enough already.
But if you're gonna order something by mail, it kinda helps if you tell the people your mailing address, eh? Otherwise, this tends to make it tough to process your order.
And THAT's what this was all about, i.e. big fuss (and a puplic one) over nothing.
"Wasn't that just that one Year when the handbooks were late?
Do you mean in 1999 when he never published one at all? Or the other years when the Handbook was late and still inaccurate because Wingfoot was too busy blasting people on Trailplace to actually focus on creating a quality product?
This isn't new, but I am glad to see the Thru-hiker's Handbook in new hands. If Baltimore Jack endorses the new author, I'd wager it's worth looking at.

I haven't seen the new Handbook, so I'm NOT endorsing it.....yet. But I've met several times with Bob personally, and have corresponded with him. He's put an incredible ammount of time and effort into the new book, and I have every confidence that I WILL end up speaking well of it.
I should be getting mine this week, and will review it, along with the other major guidebooks.

Bearpaw has the 'history' correct. That's why I agree with Jack that it's a good idea not to get enmeshed in it again; it's over, and not going to recur. "Give the new guy a chance?" Well, I'm not only on record on that - Bob seems very diligent, competent, and open - but I am a member of his forum, and glad to be such.

I believe I saw you at Trashgiving editing the Hanover information in the Handbook, I was watching as you wrote down all the changes that should be made.
I'm looking forward to your assessment of all three Thru Hiking Guidebooks.

PS: From the one conversation I had with Bob, he came across as a very nice man working his ass off to get the guidebook ready for this season.

I got my copy of the new thru-hiker's handbook on the 5th, and I've already browsed through it fairly thoroughly (I skipped over a lot of the mileages and shelters and stuff that I've already read in the companion, but I read the entire Notes section). I haven't read the previous ones, but this one is really great and has a lot of tips and really useful information for an aspiring thru-hiker like me. I ordered mine Dec. 31, and I live in Canada, so if I got it already, then it shouldn't be too long before everyone in the States is getting their copy.:sun
