I tried making a simmer ring for my alcohol stove and it doesn't quite work like I thought it was described. I cut a round piece of flat metal about 2 - 3/4 inches in diameter with a hole about the size of a quarter in the center. From the description about the simmer ring, I expected that the outer jet holes would go out and only one flame would come from the inner hole. On my stove the outer jets stayed lit. The total heat coming out was less but it was still quite substantial. Is this correct & just the best that it gets or is there a better way to simmer with the alcohol stove?

Either make another stove designed to simmer or just get a Triangia and use it's simmer ring.

I made a simmer ring for my pepsi stove and it works great. I just used another bottom of a can and let the entire center stay open. The outer rings go out and I get a nice small simmering flame. I'm sure its not a GREAT simmer ring but its something :)

The simmer ring will need to come down slightly over the outer edge of the pepsi can to snuff the jets.
I made one for my top burner.
It is two pieces, cut from the bottom of a matching can. I left a piece of the can side on one segment, bent up and out, to serve as a tab.
Using the indexed tab,I can adjust to open more or less flame. It adjusts from about 50% opening down to 5%.
I have to admit that I haven't used it yet, except to test.

Thanks for the help. I tried with the 24 oz beer can top and it covers the jets. The problem before was that it did not cover them completely. It seems to be working OK now. I am going to try making an adjustable one next.
