I'm also thinking about the parts of the Trail that are incredibly hard for even a human. I don't think a llama can do all that.

Hire a human. Seriously. Or slack parts of the Trail, don't give up your hike :sun

There was a husband and wife team that hiked on the AT last year with pack animals. It was very difficult. If you would like to communicate with them, I will give you their email address if you email me privately:

depends on where the hiking is. llamas will graze on just about anything but the problem is enough nutrition...most also carry purina llama chow....really!

:D That song will always and forever remind me of hiking on the BMT with my teenage sister. She sang that on and off the whole time, including when our brother saw a bear... she belted it out at the top of her lungs to scare it off. ;)

My husband and I often chuckle when we see comments about people wishing to sell a "trained pack llama". As far as we are concerned, virtually all llamas will pack. It takes about 5 minutes to train most llamas to carry a pack.
On the other hand, an experienced pack llama is really worth a great deal of money. This is the llama that knows that when he is carrying a pack, he is considerably wider, and he shouldn't plan on going between those two trees that are pretty close together. Clue: Some training packs for llamas have the bottoms and sides made of ballistic nylon..... you know, the stuff that stops bullets!
