I saw Giant and Crazy Diamond on way to Roan High and helped to feed them also. We enjoyed a great night with a group of section hikers from Alabama. They were in for a stiff breeze on the balds tho. It had to be 40-50 mph winds at Carver's Gap by the time we got there.

:-?I wondered who would be the first to start this thread...

The first 'Class of 2008' sighting for me was.......http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/music016.gif ........SGT Rock.....I hiked in from TN91 about 2.5 miles until I saw him, turned around and hiked back to TN91 with him. It was about 39F, raining/freezing rain/sleet/hail/whatever...supposed to snow tomorrow...

See you on the trail,

I got dropped off at Amicalola falls March 1st and was lucky enough to meet up and hike a couple days with many WB'ers this past weekend. I saw Kirby on Springer, kicked back enjoying the sun. I hiked all sunday with Wrongway, Chief Daddy and his dog (Chief), Solace and his twin brother KTR, and I saw plenty more I'm probably forgetting. I hiked with them until Woody Gap, where I got off trail at hwy 60. They were heading for Neels gap today (Monday), about 11 or so miles I think.

I ran into a bunch of 2008ers this weekend while I was hiking clockwise around the Standing Indian loop. What is pretty shocking is that, of the 8 NOBO we met north of Albert Mtn., only one had actually hiked over the mountain. The rest had taken the blue-blazed route.

How do I know this? The ground was covered with snow and the footprints told the tale.

I am no purist but I was fairly shocked. How can one miss one of the storied mountains of the southern Trail?

One person we were talking to when we stopped briefly at Big Spring Shelter said she had heard Albert Mtn. was very dangerous, and she marvelled that we planned to hike it in this weather. Dangerous? With an inch of snow that hadn't even stuck to the rocks?

I'm afraid that bypassing Albert Mt. is just a sign of the times. I find that more people in our 'comfort by any means' culture are taking the easiest or the quickest way out, which I consider the root cause of credit card indebtedness, foreclosures and personal bankruptcies along with violence, greed and substance abuse.

Albert Mountain, in the rain, was one of my first real pride moments. The narrow approach and then the climb. Once I finished that, I knew I could do pretty much anything.

I understand what you're saying but aren't you using a rather broad paintbrush?

I see a lot of folks with credit card debt and it's not always because of taking the easy way out...a lot of them suffer from the "creep" a credit card holder incurs by only paying a minimum amount each month. I think with a lot of folks its a lack of understanding in how to manage assets and debt properly. There is not much financial literacy amongst our young people about these kinds of debt instruments and the way to use them effectively.

Albert mountain bypass must be because of the Bryson-Katz blue blaze in the snow.

Of course my comment was a broad paintbrush. There are always exceptions.

Common sense: "You can't afford anything you can't pay cash for."

Another paintbrush opinion/comment:
Credit card companies are nothing but modern-day institutional Shylocks and the monentary equivalent of pimps.

I was hiking Blood Mtn that day and at the end when I was at one of the Walasiyi's cabins with BrushStrokes, Leaping Turtle, Cookie, Driftwood, and my partner for the day Glo-Worm. They asked us if we went over or around Blood Mtn. and I just looked at GW and was "you didn't tell me there was a path AROUND the Mtn." but all in all I am happy and proud that I went up and over instead of around. I didn't go out there to skip parts because they were "too hard" I don't know if I would have felt the pride I feel about that day if I had taken the short cut.

Preach on sister... it all goes back to the "instant gratification society"... Why don't they just hop a flight from Atlanta, GA to Bangor, ME and brag that they 'did the trail in a day'??

I head for the trail 4 weeks from today!! :-) I can't sleep! My heart is racing! I have the illness!

Trail maintenancehttp://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/gen162.gif today South of Iron Mt Gap in TN. Didn't expect to see anyone since we were actually digging new trail, but these two wandered by and christened the section:

Trans Fat
Jordan (WB username Brokha (http://www.whiteblaze.net/index.php?page=2008thruhikers#brok))

We didn't open the section yet, because it was a little to cold to paint blazes.

Great day for a hike. The sun :sunwas shining and it was near 60. On my trek South from Moreland Gap Shelter, searching for a blowdown near Hard Core Cascades, I saw the following hikers:

Hurricane
Spencer (My Trailjournal (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=215117))
Alex
Allgood

I found the blowdown and it's a doozy:eek:. My hand held pruning saw was no match. I made it a little easier to get up and over, but needless to say, a return trip is in orderhttp://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/chores017.gif...

Saw Foghorn, Charlie and <darnit can't remember his trail name> near Addis Gap on Saturday afternoon.

Met one thru hiker almost at the top of Tray Mountain Saturday. He didn't seem to interested in talking much beyond "How much further is that darned shelter man?". I let him know, ask him where he started that day, told him to have a good hike and turned to walk away. I just hate to stop these guys, especially when they seem so bent on keeping moving. I'll be back out there somewhere on the AT this weekend, probably see some more.

Sorry about the gender mishap, I didn't know. I am never good with names. I saw two ladies two weekends ago on Blood that look like thrus, one had blue hair. Met them on my 6 day section hike last week. They were great company. They started from gooch mt. shelter monday morning and stayed overnight at blood mountain shelter. i'd started at woody gap, so i moved on to the first camp past neels gap, and stayed ahead of them the rest of my trip. i did bump into Shadow Cast sunday morning as he was heading toward plumorchard gap. On my way back home driving thru Hiawassee i'm pretty sure i saw the girls in town. By now i bet they're somewhere near the NOC.

Was down doing a section hike from Front Royal to I-70. Today when I left I had seen Double Cheese (who just started a Trailjournal), Transfat, Liquid, Trail Foot and Donkey Legs. They were all going to be ready to head into Pa early tomorrow. Unknown Hiker, Waterbear, and Stromingnorm were also in this area and will be hitting Pa by Friday. They all joined up and had a full shelter at the Ed Garvey shelter the night before last. All are doing well and moving steadily north.

Pirate often brings PaPa with him for Trail Days. Does anyone know if he will be bringing him this time?

I ran into a bunch of 2008ers this weekend while I was hiking clockwise around the Standing Indian loop. What is pretty shocking is that, of the 8 NOBO we met north of Albert Mtn., only one had actually hiked over the mountain. The rest had taken the blue-blazed route................ETC,ETC,ETC,................. ..

While BLUE-BLAZING is NOT for me...i respect those that are hiking "their OWN HIKE".

I was doing a south bound section hike of New Jersey last week and passed Merlin and Willow with their dog at the NJ/NY line. They said they had started Feb 1. Also passed Leap just north of Delaware Water Gap at the Gren Anderson shelter. He was trying to finish by June 1 so he could go on a charity coast to coast bike ride.

Leap is in Kent, CT now. Looking like he'll finish on schedule! There are a few others ahead of him still. Trek? And I don't know who else.

Hahahaha - yeah, that makes me smile. The whole first to finish thing... I just don't get it :)

Don H - I can keep you posted... I'm his girlfriend, so I should know! He'll definitely finish. He's determined - numb feet, blisters, and all. I might get a chance to hike with him in NH in two weeks. I hope.

(And just in case... I should clarify that Leap has no interest in who finishes first - he just has a wedding to attend/a deadline to start biking across the country in June!)

No, thank you, for feeding him! And yes, he is a great guy (although I'm biased)... and he has quite a healthy appetite!

Sure, it's: www.coast2coastcycle.org

I believe I heard a heard a vague plan about averaging 100 miles a day... but you'll have to check back once they start to see how that goes. Knowing him, I wouldn't doubt it, though!

Anyway, 100% of the money that is raised is going to the Children's Hunger Fund. Which is a great charity that is particularly relevant now, in light of the cost of rice almost doubling for poorer countries within the past few weeks, not to mention recent food riots, protests, and shortages.

Please feel free to check it out.

Well I am horrible with names in just passing and if I don't write them down, I just forget them anyway. But FYI. I met a few on my section hike this week. So there are still some NOBOs in Georgia. First crew was a couple that stayed with me at Sassafras Gap Thursday night. The lady was suffering from bad knees so they were getting late starts and only making 10 or 11 miles a day. They had been out 9 days I think they said. I never saw them again yesterday and they said they were pulling off at Cloud 9 due to the thunderstorms due in today. Another NOBOer passed me just north of Kelly Knob, very young guy, I saw him hitching a ride into Hiawassee at Dicks Creek yesterday just after lunch. Then I rode into Cloud 9 myself with a brother/sister duo yesterday. The sister was calling her brother Stalker because he hiked so close to her. He said their dad told him to look out for her. She told me her trail name, but I forgot it. Then there was a nice guy from Boston at Cloud 9 with his dog. He is a newbie hiker and just decided he wanted to do the trail. I think he said he had been dubbed snakegripper because he had caught some sort of snake and was cooking it for supper on night on the trail.

Look at his journal, he made it from harpers ferry to 501 Shelter from Wednesday, May 21, 2008 to Tuesday, May 27, 2008. (if my calcs are right , he did 171 miles in 7 days.) Monday june 2nd, ran into Smokin Joe on the best vista on three ridges in central Virginia. was on his way to completing a marathon 20-something mile day. he was trying to make it to humpback rocks before nightfall. thats like 20 clicks north. stayed the night at Maupin Field shelter and offered Blaze the rest of my skittles, but humbly took only a handful. both heading NoBo. they were like celebrities to me, but really just normal lads out for a long walk...
Also at Maupin, met Banjo Boy and his father (regretfully didn't catch his name). they're headed south from harpers all the way to Damascus-the complete breadth of our beautiful state. this is my dream hike, especially cool cause he got his dad out there with him. banjo boy serenaded a few around the campfire with his banjo skills. hes been plucking for four years, but the sound he got from that thing made it seem like he'd been playing most of his life. needless to say, it was a magical, completely situational experience only found out on the trail. my adventure was stored fresh on the hard drive of my brain, and i thanked him for the memories in the morning when i headed back to reeds gap. heading north, up out of the gap, i could hear him plucking faintly. unfortunately, i passed no one heading south for the day- i laughed at the thought of some poor guy hiking along and hearing banjo noises out in the middle of the wilderness. heaven to my ears, but quite a surreal and nervous hike for them. especially if they had just recently seen "deliverance" for the first time.

At 3B's ice cream stand in Duncannon tonight: Hopper, Cat, and Indy. On my way out of town as the sun neared the horizon they had just crossed the Juniata River into Dauphin County. Apparently more than a few spent more than one night in the Doyle on account of the heat wave.

Dropped Kirby and Cookie off back at Rt 52 on Sunday. Ran into Seattle Sailor at Shenendoah tenting area. At RPH was a thru-hiker, Foot Machine who had also thru-hiked in 84', an older guy. Later Ishmael came in, and I ran into Start who was walking around confused on Hortontown Rd. Also ran into Sleepwalker and Longstep both of whom went down to RPH. I gave them all some food, but was majorly trumped by youngNdumb, an 07' hiker who brought all sorts of goodies to the shelter.

His knee problems had forced him off for a few weeks but he rejoined her, I think in Waynesboro. I spent Sunday 7/20 with Wrongway 08 and Peanut in North Adams, Ma. I had decided a while ago to put on a feed for Wrongway (I hiked with him in the "Parade of Fools" hike in N.Y. in Jan. '08).
It was the first time I had met Peanut.
Wrongway, as usual, often headed down the wrong path, or would come out to a road convinced that the trail was headed one way when it was really headed the other :p.
Peanut is a gem. She's got a wonderfully healthy sense of humor and is a real "down to earth" person as is Wrongway.
We decimated an AYCE Chinese restaurant next to the local supermarket, then proceded to the Friendly's restaurant across the street where they shared a strawberry shortcake sundae and I had a cup of coffee and lots of water as it was very hot and I was not in great hiking condition (I climbed Mt. Greylock in the dark arriving at Wilbur Clearing shelter at 12:30 am, carrying water but no food, and they met me after climbing over the summit later in the morning).
After the feed and their resupply I accompanied them to the next campsite north of North Adams where we hung around and talked until I decided that I had to go because I had left my headlamp in the pocket of my jacket in my trunk after they had reloaded their packs.
We all had a great time, and I'm hoping I get a chance to see them again before their trip is finished.

Tonight while working on the area near the AT train stop I saw three NoBo they were Peachy Keen Mosey and Slap Happy. I have paper up at the train stop so that hikers can leave notes to each other. It looks like Scout and Harvest passed through Pawling yesterday.

Anyone seen: Yak, Fred, Buzzard, Bojangles, Red Eyes or Guitar Joe? There were a lot more people that started at Springer in early April and made similar progress as I did as far as the NOC, but of course I can't remember all their names! I don't see their names here though...

Slept at Fingerboard Shelter in Harriman last weekend (8/10) and didn't meet any thru-hikers the whole weekend. Figured we'd see a few slackers, but it's clear the pack is in New England by now. When I ridgeran in 05' the last of the Nobo's were coming thru Jersey in mid-August.

Still seeing a few here and there and some are saying that there are still more behind but at this point they may be needing to flip.

Anyone seen team hollywood? This is the couple that the German film crew was following.
Also what about Shrepa Dan? The last time I heard he was talking about leaving the trail.

Cubby, Santana and their group (didn't get the rest of their names) passed our camp in PA on Saturday about 3 miles north of Rt.309. Seemed like a real cool bunch.

Just gave a lift to Patch and Levi both NoBo started in May, out of Pawling back to the trail. They had spent a few days down in NYC and are ready to hit the trail again and get back to some trail that has real ups and downs. I'll try to post the pic when I can.

I got a call from Hippo last night and gave him a ride back out to the trail from Pawling. He had two friends come out and took them on a day hike in the area near Telephone Pioneer Shelter and Cat Rock. He was looking forward tot he trail hitting some more interesting terrain coming up. He had gotten my number from Moses who he said is down near Bear Mt NY by now. I was able to post a pic of Hippo last night on WB.
