View Full Version : 3D Fly Through
I've been goofing with Google Earth. Here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=tPwcLXOjZUw) is a 3D fly through of the trail from Springer to Neel's Gap. This is based on the ATC 2002 data (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.jkLXJ8MQKtH/b.851255/k.4226/Appalachian_Trail_GIS_and_GPS_Data.htm). The red line designates the trail. It looks a little better if you click on the full screen button (bottom right).

Real cool!!! Just wish it would have focused faster!!

Yeah, even using Google Earth Plus, my business broadband, duo processor and a big disk cache it still takes a while to load the details. And YouTube scales the resolution down alot. But I'm still fiddling with ways to make it look better.

i love this. monday, springer to neels gap. tuesday - to fontana. today - to hot springs. i would sometimes leave the room and come back in, and be able to tell right where they are on the trail. it was ten years ago and this makes it feel like last week. i'm fairly new to whiteblaze and it has got my blood pumping. i've started planning for another go at it in a few years.
Makes it all look pretty easy. Walking vs. technology, hmmm.
