Does anyone know (besides an army surplus store, we don't have one local) where I can get one of these handy little items?

Is this what you're looking for?

I've also seen them in other outfitters, sometimes packaged with larger kits containing utinsils and small containers.

Go with the P51. It's obviously better. If it wasn't it'd be called a P37.
:D
I’m not sure what the P-51 can opener is, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. But I have lots of P-38 ones and they work great.
Why are all the can openers named after WWII aircraft???:-?

The P-51 is a civilian copy of the P-38 military can opener. It is operated the same way, only the P-51 is larger than the P-38.

I was one of the rare guys that LIKED C-rats. The turkey was the bomb but the spaghetti made me gag. Trading was common.
I must also be one of the rare ones because I to liked c-rats, especially the fruit cocktail and the "john wayne" bars. Always traded the pork patties and the greenish eggs & ham though.

My Army career was at the tail end of C-rats. We switched over to MREs around the end of my first year.

I have one of those, pretty cool little can opener, someone just recently gave it to me, although i dont usually carry canned goods on the trail with me , maybe i'll put it in my camper. :-?
Johnny Quest, from the Georgia-outfitters.com site:
It's official designation has been 'US ARMY POCKET CAN OPENER' or 'OPENER, CAN, HAND, FOLDING, TYPE I', but it is more commonly know by its nickname the P-38 which it supposedly acquired from the 38 Punctures required to open a C-Ration can. It is also known by many as a "John Wayne" especially those in the Navy and Marines because in a WWII training film he was opening a can of C-Rations using a P-38, from then on Marines or Sailors started referring to them as a "John Wayne".

Many cans now come with self-opening tabs. Some stuff that used to come in cans only is available in foil pouches. Look for the right packaging and try to avoid the can opener. Saves weight and is not another thing to say, "now where the heck did I put that?"
