I had this really weird thing come to me this weekend when sitting home caring for the wife who has the flu.

I want to try to do all the 4000 plus peaks in Georgia, especially since most of them are within 30 minutes of me.

So I have the list, what I don't have is a way to find out which trail(s) get me to the summits. Anyone got an idea on how to find out. Some of them are easy because I know they are on the AT. Some are more difficult. Any ideas or pointers from somebody who has already did this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes I even created a spreadsheet using that page. Now I just have to get to the top of all of them!

Cowpen mountain in the Cohutta Wilderness can be accessed by East Cowpen Trail. This trail was once the route of old Hwy. 2
This is a description from Tim Homan's "Hiking Trails of the Cohutta & Big Frog Wildernesses"
Startingat its southerntrailhead at Three ForksMountain, the route riseses easily on its first and only sustained upgrade along the high east slope of Cowpen Mountain. The state highway turned bear path begins atop the ridgecrest, but soon slips onto the sunrise slope where the ridge climbs harder than the road builders wanted to follow.:D
I'll try and find more info. I like the ambition!

And you can drive to Brasstown Bald.

You can hike up Brasstown Bald via a blue blaze trail off the AT in Chattahoochee Gap (between Hogpen and Unicoi Gap)

This is Jack's Knob Trail.

OK, on thing hindering my research now is the unnamed peaks in the file. All the named ones are fairly easy. It is the unnamed ones that seem to be eluding me now.

On top of that, if any of you can suggest a trail that might knock out one or more of these in one fail swoop, I'd love that. For example, I am thinking with a little blue blazing off the Coosa Backcountry that I could get Coosa Bald, Slaughter Mountain, and Blood Mountain in one hike.

And yes, I was planning on hiking to Brasstown, probably not off the AT, but at least from the parking lot. I've rode up to the top a couple of times, that doesn't count in my book.

Well, I'm a partial moron. It just came to me that I have the coordinates I can use Google Earth to find the peaks and where they are. So now all I need is to know whether there are trails to the summits or if I will be bushwhacking my way to some of the summits.
I am sure this is not a novel idea to just me. Someone else (probably lots of folks) have done this.

Also, if you click on the name of the peak it pulls up a topographic map of the area.

You might want to think about doing all the 6000 foot peaks in the Carolinas/Tenn.

Yeah, that might be next on the list. But the Georgia peaks that are close by will be first! Thanks for the link though!

You can hit Coosa and Slaughter in the course of a CBT loop hike.

Blood Mtn., too if you take the blue blaze and plan on either coming out at Reese Parking lot or retracing your steps to the CBT and exiting at Vogel.

Yeah, I sort of had it figured that way myself. I don't know if I'd be better off backtracking or heading on down to Reese parking lot.

Prolly about the same physical exertion either way but if you backtrack you save a shuttle/hitch/roadwalk.

You could start and end at Reese hitting Blood, Slaughter, camp on Coosa and back out the next day.

Be a fun dayhike too, if you're feeling froggy.

What's the deal with No. 7? Z002GA, or whatever? Isn't that just Tray Mtn?

So the Unicoi to Dicks Creek section hike would hit Rocky Mtn (4017), Tray (4430) and Double Spring / Kelly Knob (4280).

Why can't we just name all of our mountains in Georgia? Are we too lazy? If it pays around $60K a year, I'm willing to take on the job of summiting and naming all the unnamed mountains in Georgia? I'd even be willing to do some research and name it appropriately if the pay scale is right.

Let's just wait for a few politicians to die. That often provides a few naming opportunities.
