Mrs Baggins 05-14-2008, 16:13 Great shelter sleeps close to 18 nice piped spring out front Just don't go anywhere near that privy.... gold bond 05-14-2008, 16:39 Just don't go anywhere near that privy.... I swear the privy is haunted or at least possesed in some way!! Tabasco 05-14-2008, 17:20 It was inhabited by about 40 mice last time I was in it. I can still see those 80 tiny little eyes staring back at me from the glow of my headlamp. shoe 05-15-2008, 17:39 Just don't go anywhere near that privy.... I soon as I saw the title of the post I just knew you would be chiming in :D Cookerhiker 05-15-2008, 19:17 It was inhabited by about 40 mice last time I was in it. I can still see those 80 tiny little eyes staring back at me from the glow of my headlamp. I stayed there (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=84127) in late October '04. No mice - was it too late in the year for them? halibut15 05-19-2008, 22:25 I had a chance to stay in that shelter in '06. Then the Boy Scouts came.... Flush2wice 05-20-2008, 08:21 Northbounders should water up and continue to Cheoah to camp. It's one of the best sunsets on the trail. Beats a shelter any day. Monkeyboy 07-13-2008, 20:52 Stayed there last week. Water flowing great at the spring. Nice and spacious shelter. Cons - Horrible privy. No bear cables. Very little flat land for camping close to shelter. Very steep entry trail that gets slick when wet. edtheshark 07-24-2008, 16:48 Maybe we should start a "fund" to replace/reapir the privy. I would be willing to donate a few bucks. I was up there around 7/1/08 and thought I might fall thru. daddytwosticks 06-28-2009, 16:09 Stayed there last night...somebody drew a big biohazard symbol on the back of the privy. How appropriate. Oh, by the way, water was flowing great at the spring in front of the shelter. :) BlackCloud 10-18-2009, 23:57 As of 10-12-09, condition was poor, as it was covered in liter. Spring flowing well... Doooglas 10-19-2009, 19:59 I had a chance to stay in that shelter in '06. Then the Boy Scouts came.... WOWZA Boy Scouts ? They still have those ? I thought all of those little pale, chubby kidz only did " virtual hiking" these daze. Christus Cowboy 10-20-2009, 10:12 Northbounders should water up and continue to Cheoah to camp. It's one of the best sunsets on the trail. Beats a shelter any day. I was up there this past April and the shelter itself was ok and the water source was in good shape. I didn't stay in the shelter as my buddy and I wanting to keep the shelter space available for the thrus.... As for the privy?... Well let's just say being a toxic waste avenger wasn't part of the trail plan. I agree that Cheoah is great place to camp though the climb from the NOC to Sassafras Gap was a tough run for me and we decided to stay there and get up in the morning and catch those views the next day. |
