Thruhikers dream about how nice it would be to section hike, picking their sections for the best time of year especially when experiencing the heat and mosquitos of NJ-NY-CT-MA in midsummer.
Section hikers dream about how nice it would be to thru hike, especially when back at the office on a nice day instead of hiking.

How to lose an audience in 4 posts?
A thruhiker has actually COMPLETED a long trail in one season.
Someone attempting a thruhike is a section hiker until he/she gets to the end.
Ex: I section hiked the Long Trail between 1991 and 1999. I am not a thruhiker. I am a section hiker who has completed a long trail.
I am currently section hiking the AT.

the thru hiker thinks the world revolves around his needs and the section hiker merely enjoys his hike.

Speak for yourself...after a few days I'm eatin' the dang M&M. Then again I'm told when I was a toddler I used to eat baked worms off the sidewalk!

sheepdog wins if a thru hiker see a M&M on the trail he will pick it up and eat it where a section hiker see the M&M will just step over it.
Sheepdog I will put a few M&Ms on the trail for you. :banana

A section hiker will step over an M&M on the trail.
Not always true.. I long distance section hike, and I'll tell you what, there have been plenty of times where I've eaten off the ground/shelter floor/weird dehydrated food in unmarked bags in hiker boxes.
sheepdog wins if a thru hiker see a M&M on the trail he will pick it up and eat it where a section hiker see the M&M will just step over it.
Great... almost as funny as when wingfoot put that joke in his guide book a year ago, wrong. Or when I heard it from the ten year old who claims he wrote that joke in 2004.
The correct joke is:
A day hiker steps over the m+m
A section hiker eats it
A thru hiker digs for more.
Now that's funny there!
I am just an outdoors person. ;)
I would say the difference is about 2150 or so miles.
The answer: Everyone's a section hiker until they complete the trail.
