A concept to solve the problem of storing a cone windscreen.

I am uncertain if cone windscreens improve effeciency to tell the truth. The jury is out with me. If they do, my theory is that it is due to the distance between windscreen and stove at ground level creating a larger 'turbulence-free zone'.

The main problem with cones is they are challenge to pack.

A pyramid would serve the same purpose but can be stored flat. Here's the basic math:

An automatic calculator can be found here (http://www.csgnetwork.com/righttricalc.html).

This would be one of four panels.

The easiest method is to simply make four paper panels sized to your pot and tape them together to use as a pattern:

Trace them onto an oven liner and cut out the outline:

Fold it into a square and you have your basic windscreen. I left a tab on one end in order to make the closure "magnetic": (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=28430)

Here's an example of a Pyramid for a Heineken pot. This one weighs 1/2 ounce:

When not in use, the windscreen folds flat for easy storage:

Yes, yes, this one still requires a potstand. The obvious next step is to have a go at constructing one of aluminum flashing or other material that will also support the pot. My time is limited at present but I wanted to throw the idea out there in case someone would like to play with it. :)

Cool! Cut slots in the side and it can double as a cheese grater!

well, i've bookmarked the page just in case. I've had pretty good success with the Caldera cones, enough to mostly wean me off my beloved Svea stoves. I would like to figure out how to make my own cone for some of my old messkits, but getting the angle right has been the drawback. maybe i can figure out something with this.

you got a good idea, trapezoid shape is strong
drill holes in it, 5/16 th and stick two gutter spikes through it to hold up the pot. mine is round (same size as pot cozy and same height) and it works just fine. packs well too.

Skids, Nicely done! Looks like a simple, elegant DIY answer to the cone-shape windscreen, but I'm wondering how well it will do in real practice.

Any chance you can give that a wind-test. Maybe you could use a fan, swing it back and forth?

I'm shocked and a little bit hurt that you think I haven't tested the Pyramid windscreen thoroughly.

I have. It makes a wonderful cheese grater.

Interesting...very interesting! I love my Caldera cone. BUT I am always open to new ideas. This seems to be an interesting discovery. Definitely let Gungho and I know what more you discover with this. :)

It seems to me that your pyramid idea would make a great woodstove/windscreen design. Make it out of aluminum flashing and use tent stakes to hold the potbottom at the right height from the ground. Yes, woodsmoke will stain the bottom of your pan, so you would have to carry a pot stuffsack, but you would not have to carry a stove or any fuel.

It would make a stand for your bowling ball, too! Multi-use!

Just got a funny image of Skidsteer strutting down the trail with a bowling ball attached to the outside of his pack. :p
