View Full Version : Nashville area
My wife is having a 'girls weekend' in Nashville in April. Are there any decent hiking in the area?
Of couse there are! Bearpaw and RainMan are a couple of great sources for trail. The White Blaze group just did a nice hike at Radnor Lake.
Kewl, I'll give 'em a shout. Thanks.
My wife is having a 'girls weekend' in Nashville in April. Are there any decent hiking spots with an hour or two of there?
It all depends on the mileage and type of hike, but YES, within an hour or so there are four GREAT spots.
1) Radnor Lake State Natural Area. (just off of I-65, exit 74 or 78) About 10 miles of good trails around the lake. Half low right around it, two that climb about 330 each.
2) The Warner Parks. (Southwest side of town in the Belle Meade are) About 10 1/2 miles with LOTS of PUDS, not a lot of great views, but GREAT prep for Georgia. Broken into Edwin and Percy Warner Parks, but can be connected with the 1-mile candy cane connector trail.
3) Long Hunter State Park. (Southeast side of town and part in Rutherford County, about 5 miles off of I-24 exit 62) LOTS of trails, maybe about 13 miles total, but none connectable. The best bet is the Volunteer Trail, 6 miles one way following the edge of Percy Priest Lake. Or the 4-mile Day Loop Trail, which swings off of it. VERY little elevation on any of Long Hunter's trails.
4) A bit further away in Cheatham County, but very nice is Montgomery Bell State Park. It offers 13 miles of trail in a large figure 8 with moderate elevation gain.
These are the local spots where I go to work out and stay in decent trail shape.
BTW, I got your PM and sent a PM with options for shorter and longer overnight treks. The longer ones require up to 2 hours drive, but are worth it.

Sure there are lots of good hiking opportunities in middle Tennessee. Just need to know if you want to drive a bit or stay close, and whether you want a day hike or overnight hike. Also, whether you are looking for local hikers in addition to local hiking.

I'm willing to drive 2-3 hours each way. I'm dropping my wife off in Nashville early on Friday, and I will need to pick her up midday on Sunday. So I'd want to camp somewhere on Friday and Saturday nights.
I'm open to anyone in the area joining me on my trip, as I don't really know the area.
I'm also open to where we hike, mileage, pace, etc.
FYI: I will have my two dogs with me.
Thanks.
Sounds like Big South Fork for a two nighter might be a good choice. I'd be more than willing to tag along.....

Savage Gulf and the "South Cumberland" would also be excellent choices. About an hour and a half away, lots of trails, good streams and waterfalls, good camping spots.
Lilred is right, the Big South Fork would be fine too. Even the Land Between the Lakes might appeal to you, though it's pretty flat.

I do the Warner Parks and/or Radnor lake trails almost every weekend even when not in training. Both are great areas so close to heavy populations that its almost amazing they feel so secluded.
I especially recommend Radnor Lake on a rainy day. Trail isn't muddy because of the mulching the Rangers do and no one else is out in the weather except me :-)
The way I look at it, anyone hiking/planning to hike on the AT for any reasonable time shouldn't let rain stop them or they'll never go. No rain no Maine.

You need to go to virgin falls it is awesome that is the only place that I have ever camped behind a waterfall.

Percy Warner is clutch for a nice 3 hours of hiking. Otherwise, Big South Fork is fantastic.

If you don't mind driving - Big South Fork is awesome and has some great rock features (see the my pict gallery)... Stone arches and rocks to camp under (although your not supposed to...everyone does) - a lot of trails so you can put on some miles . Else i'd go down and check out the fiery Gizzard trail down near sewannee (it's on my list to go check out) http://www.friendsofscsra.org/parkmap.htm

There is the Cumberland Trail on over on the plateau edge from Chattanooga to Cumberland Gap Park.
Big South Fork.
Fall Creek Falls.
Land Between the Lakes.
Mammoth Cave National Park.

Phreak, I know this was last year, but since several of us pitched in with suggestions, how about a trip report?
