I found a mint black leather eastpack fanny pack with front coin pouch in the basement of my parents house. Im thinking about sporting it on the trip, yay or nay, possible helpfull? I was thinking I could really use it for small easily ecsessable items like mp3 player, water treatment, or snack. Whata ya think?

I would say not to bring it. You should have room for snacks and an mp3 player in your pocket or in a side pocket of your pack. For water treatment, you will probably be taking your pack off anyways when you get water, so just store that in your pack as well. I wouldn't want to have a fanny pack on and a pack with a hip belt. You can also get some packs that have built in pockets in the hip belt if you really want that feature, and if your wanting to get a new pack.

I wouldn't hike without my fanny pack. It keeps my ID, debit/credit cards, Advil, camera, MP3, snack, cell phone, cash right in front of me at all times. I can drop the backpack and still have those things right with me. Wearing it has never interfered with or in any way been uncomfortable with my pack's hip belt. I could have my pack stolen (it happens people, whether you want to admit it or not) or destroyed somehow but I could replace everything as long as I had my cash and credit cards with me, or at least get a ride home. Jackets get left behind or lost as well. In town I can leave the pack in the hotel/hostel and easily have my Id and all right with me.

It's a bit of extra weight but hey, up to you. If you like to take pictures i think it's a good idea. If you eat while you walk too. Having glasses handy if you need them for a glance at the data book, etc.
Also a video camera could go in there. I hate when that big bull elk (or Moose on the AT) comes across your path and you have to take off your pack to dig for the video camera.
If i used a hip belt, i certainly woulnd't use it except to perhaps sew the zip compartment onto the hipbelt.

Is one of Marmot's "wet ribs". Holds a liter Nalgene, lunch, maps, and guidebook NP. Rides higher and farther out than a fanny pack. Used one my entire thruhike.
I like front packs. Fanny packs make great front packs but I think they should be integrated with the backpack somehow, or at least be suspended from the shoulder straps so everything can be worn a bit looser.

Where did you find that? I went to REI - nothing. Went to Marmot. com. Nothing.

Same here. I bought a 3oz nylon fanny pack on ebay for $5 (to replace the old free one I got from some promotional give-away). Works great. Mine also has toilet paper in it. I have a few others things in it as well as it also is my "survival kit".

Thanks for the link. I did find it at one other place but they said it was sold out and no longer available. I'll just keep my current REI fanny pack. I keep TP in it as well - forgot to list that one.

Only problem I can see is that the location of the fanny pack when worn is usually right where the hip belt of your backpack rides. That makes it far too uncomfortable to make up for the added room or ease of access to simple items carried in it. If you wear the pack around the backside, then the lower section of the backpack rests on the fanny pack and causes a real pain in the "donkey".
If you just need a bit more storage for small items, look for a camera case or something similar that will easily attach to the shoulder straps of your backpack, or use cargo-style pants.

I agree, I have used one for years...bought at goodwill for $2 and only 3 oz on digital scale. I always see them at thrift stores.
Does all mentioned above, and instant access for camera, in a few seconds.
If you put your pack hipbelt on first and then adjust and snap your fanny pack in the front it usually rides just below the hip belt, with no discomfort.
I usually also keep my data/map pages and a bandanna in there also. If I am tenting at a shelter I take my fanny pack (with my headlamp in it, to cook at the table) and my foodbag with me.
At night in my tent/shelter it stays with me for instant access to my glasses, headlamp and make sure no valuables are left behind...great in town as mentioned above!
In the early 90's I used, and still have, the "wet rib" from Marmot, but it attaches to the pack straps which I don't prefer for convenience of always having with me.

I've used a fanny pack for years with my backpack. I keep my maps, trailguides, reading glasses, compass, whistle, lip balm, snacks (to allow me to graze while walking), camera (I find that I miss too many shots if the camera is in the pack), other small often used items. Very useful.
I put the fanny pack on 1st and slide it up my chest (fanny pack to the front). Put my pack on and tighten my hipbelt, then just slide the fanny pack down so the fanny pack rests over my hipbelt buckle. That way it doesn't slide down and doesn't bounce and the hipbelt supports it.
It adds a little weight, but I guess it's one of the luxury items for me.

Ya I think having a camera right where you need it is a huge plus.
Hi just pick up a really nice fanny pack at kmart. They had them a closeout sale on them for 4.99 was 14.99 it has a main front pocket two side pockets and two small on top of the side pockets. This fanny pack will hold a
bottle of water 22oz. size room for my camera guide book & maps journal and snacks.
:)
Fanny Packs make great holsters. ;)

Yeah I dropped the fanny pack for day hiking. It unbalances me. I don't know re: if you need the room, it might work on the side. Fanny pack is a misnomer anyway, only bikers where them on the fannies (which might make good holsters :-))

I have used the Marmot Rib (used to be the Dana Rib). It works. But when you take your pack off, you take the Rib off, too.
So, I don't hike without my fanny pack. It's always on, or next to my head when I'm sleeping. Camera, headlamp, whistle, ear plugs, wallet, snack, bandana, small swiss army knife, etc. When I drop my pack, I'm still carrying all those things. Great around camp, on breaks, and in town.
No issues with the pack waist belt. I put on the fanny pack, then put the pack hip belt under it, letting the fanny pack flop over the pack hip belt. (Yes, my pack has hip belt pockets too. Useful for other things.)

I've hiked around 250 with nothing more than a fanny pack. I didn't like it myself. All the weight was on my hips the entire time. It really got annoying.

DEET, sunscreen, lip balm, snack, camera, microlight, hand sanitizer all in my $2 surplus Jansport fanny pack. With room to spare. Yup.
A fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

Was handy enough, that if I lost, I'd hit E-Bay, Craig's List, etc., to find another one.
An alternative is one that doesn't have the water bottle holder, called a dry rib. It's otherwise the same.

I got a wet rib from here last year lst minute. It arrived quick as well. However I didn't like it and found a fanny pack in a hiker box that I used the rest of the trip. However a fellow hiker that i gave the wet rib to loved it.
Ive never worn one but STP has a Golite one on sale: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/,92780_GoLite-Swift-Lumbar-Pack-Hydration-Compatible.html

I tried the fanny pack up front and it worked great to hold maps, guidebooks, water, accessories etc except the weight pushed down on the hip belt and I was constantly hitching it up. Since I stepped on the buckle and broke it, I've been going without.

i picked up this tiny backpack at walmart for 10 bucks. i wear it backwards so that it is at the perfect place between chest and gut. call it a chestpack. then my back pack goes on. the backpack straps hold the chestpack straps in place. its comfortable enough, yet to see if it contributes alot to straprash. but its great for holding a waterbottle, camera, snacks and maps.

I use a fanny pack up front and have for a long time. I keep maps, trail guide sheets, camera, compass, snacks, chapstick, anti-chafing stuff. Little items that I like to have close at hand in it. I put it on first and my pack hipbelt underneath it. Works for me.

Seems like Granite Gear has a lid on some of their packs that detaches for fanny pack use. This would be a plus for towns or fishing trips.
