Start off by reading through the articles on this website: http://whiteblaze.net/index.php?page=content

Also, check out the NYNJTC as a good source of information about the trail-rich area you're in. http://www.nynjtc.org/

Then ask questions. Borrow a pack, do some short day hikes.

Do you have any backpacking equipment? Part of the fun in this game is playing with toys that are required. Shopping for packs, sleeping bags, tents, boots, clothing, etc. etc. is fun (if you got the cash!). When you make such large investments, you goota get out and play!!!! Get enough for an overnight camp. You learn alot in short hikes.:welcome

Check out Sargent Rocks "cheap gear" article and put together a box or camping and hiking stuff.

Then, do some car camping and dayhikes or overnighters first.

Then, start replacing that stuff with "better" stuff, if you choose. $$$$

Welcome to WB... another good article to check out is SGT Rock's What to Carry (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?p=132311#post132311) series. This is a series of 5 articles but well worth the read. :)

FYI. The links at the bottom of each article (the first two anyway) are broken.

The links to the next article in the series can be found in the menu list at the left hand side of the page. (In case anybody is/was looking)

Thanks for the head's up. I'll see if I can fix that.

ETA... links fixed. :)
