Howdy folks. I'm heading southbound in June with a buddy who's doing a thru-hike. Sadly I won't be able to go the whole thing...probably going to be getting about 6 weeks worth of hiking in. Can anybody give me an estimate of where this might put me, as I'm starting at Katahdin? I'm guessing we'll be doing the standard 10 mi/day. Thanks.

Thanks thestin. I was hoping for a bit farther along, but I guess 2 states isn't so bad.
Your trip will include the White Mountains. You will most likely feel you have accomplished something by the time you get to Hanover

No doubt...just wish I could finish up a little farther south. Thanks for the quick response!

If you're set on 10 miles per day, then Hanover is about 442 miles south of Katahdin, which you should be able to cover in 6 weeks (42 days, so 10.5 AT miles per day). Here is a slightly outdated AT mileage calculator (http://www.thebackpacker.com/trails/at.php).
By the time you start getting into hiking shape in 3-4 weeks you'll be in southern Maine, which with the Whites has some of the hardest hiking, so you may not be able to increase you daily mileage much beyond the 10 you estimated. If you want to get further, consider trying to increase you daily mileage to 13-15 per day in central Maine, which might allow you to squeeze out another 45 miles to reach Killington/Rutland, Vermont.
In 2001 I got to Hanover in six weeks. That included 2 "0" days. At 66 years old I was hiking slow.
I would think that the black flies would be a major challenge to a June hike in the Maine woods.

Can't say I'm excited about that part. :reverse:banana

Maine and the Whites are beautiful. Don't hurry through them.

I'm starting June 10th and am figuring after four weeks being around Pinkham Notch or maybe even Crawford Notch....Hanover sounds about right to me as well for six weeks.

Another vote for hanover. I got out of Maine on day 31 and to Hanover a coupld weeks later. Enjoy.
I hiked a six week section from Katahdin and got to Rutland.
