Hey all. Long time troll, maybe the last year or so, but recently getting back into the idea again.

So, I recently went to the local Wally and wasnt expectin much, but the Lord was with me that day, and they had 20 yards of grey and this dark forrest green of Nylon, and a very small amount of a heavier one, all rip stop.

Bought the 20 yards, and then when I got home, upon further testing/suspect, I think it is 1.1, and not 1.9. Not really sure to test this, I guess I could weight it, ive got a small scale, what size should I weight and what should it be?

Also, what do I do with this stuff now, I can return it, but I have seen the Zhammock and that looks promising. I havent found what the strength of it, but I did read at one site that he was using 1.1 single layered to make one.

As this would be my first experience with sewing as well, any tips? Or, any other projects I could do with this stuff to learn until I do find some silnylon/1.9?

Thanks guys. Been trollin so long cause, well there really is that much stuff here to read, and its so comprehensive

Someone please check me, but I think you could weigh the entire bundle then calculate area in square yards and divide to find ounces per square yard.

tarp, hammock, wind/rain suite, poncho, quilt, backpack, daypack, fannypack, pack cover, stuff sacks, more stuff sacks.......well thats about it.

That is what I would do also. Sailmakers yards are different, so what they call 1/2 oz cloth is not 1/2 oz per square yard. All that should really matter to you is how much your cloth weighs per square yard.

So:

Weight[ounces] x 36 [inches/yard]
------------------------------------ = Weight [ounces per square yard]
Length [yards] x Width [inches]

Yeah, I was thinking I dont really need all this fancy Silnylon since I am in Cali, dont really need to worry about rain too much. Was just hoping to hear that it was strong enough to hold me up.

Tarp or hammock easier to start with? Hammocks look alot easier to sew, but harder to get right.

Ive got a little gram scale from who knows what  and ill just cut a small square and measure it.

They are suppose to be getting more materials next week.

Any requests? I dont know what it costs to ship from here (if it is more) but ill be tryin to source for white or black nylon for myself, for the sake of looks, and sil. If I find anythin else, and you want it, ill gladly pick it up for ya.

I can see two want some already.

If you are going to hammock camp, at some point you'll want an underquilt and a top quilt. The 1.1 would be perfect for either. You could make it down filled or make it Jardine-style with Primaloft (5oz?) from Thruhiker. There are many who've done so and posted plans at www.hammockforums.net.

Was lookin at a bunch of different lightweight manufactured packs for ideas as to what one would look like, and maybe trying to make my own pattern

My friend is sick, so I couldnt possibly ask her to try and teach me to sew in that situation. So, figured I could play around with comin up with somethin.

Most of these manufactured packs are made with like... 240d and 400d nylon. Isnt 1.1 ripstop, even drw, just 40d? Is this strong enough? But, ive read it is strong enough for hammocks. Will likly get poked through easy I suppose while being tossed around.

Make the Z hammock and sell the rest of that green ripstop to me.

How much do you want? I can get lots at a particular walmart on the east coast for $1/yard.

If it is uncoated ripstop, you can use it for windpants or a windshirt. I made windpants out of some 1.1 ripstop and the finished weight was about 2.2 ounces. You can also use it for a sleeping bag or quilt, or as a shell for insulated clothing, a bivy top (provided you treat it with a DWR), and many other projects where you need a windproof/downproof, lightweight shell.

PS, I think you mean that you've been a lurker (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/lurker.htm), not a troller (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/troller.htm). ;)

Right on. I thought they were the same, but upon checkin urban dictionary, definetly different.

Still havent suckered anyone to teach me to sew yet, but hopefully will get started on a project sometime in the next two weeks. Ill definetly keep you all posted.

Might do a few stuff sacks, then we will see. Clothes or tarps.
