Would anyone be interested in hiking from the Clarks Ferry Bridge to PA Rt 225, which is 7.2 miles on the AT. I am looking at May 3 or 4, 2008.

It's an excellent 7 miles. The climb up is sweet. At the top of the climb there is a rock outcropping that you can walk out on. From the rocks you get the coolest view. The Susquehanna River is in your view directly east as well as directly west. On a map you can see where the river wraps around Peters Mt.

Once on top, there is a old pipeline about a mile past the William Penn Shelter that offers some good views of the river and beyond. Not only do you get a good view of the Dauphin Narrows and the effects the rocks have on the river, but you also see the Rockville Bridge, which is the longest stone-arch supported railbridge in the world. And, on a clear day, you can see Three Miles Island about 30 miles down river. The nuclear plant is easy to pick out due to the steam pouring from the tops of its reactors.

The last bit is rocky, but in a navigable but challenging way. I normally park at 225 and choose the direction I want to go depending on my mood. If I want to step it out, I head north to the Peter's Mt. Shelter. If I want to hike a more physical hike, I head south towards the River.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the info. I will probabaly hike north, as I try to hike north most of the time, but for logistics purposes sometime with shuttle help, I have to hike south.

Is anyone interesting in doing this hike, on or around those dates?

I've already hiked that section but am interested in hiking further north from Blue Rocks campground to Delaware Water Gap (and beyond). Looking more for mutual shuttle help than an actual hiking partner.

Yahtzee, were you a donating member, I would have PMed you to suggest you modify your post. You are referring to Clarks Ferry Shelter, not William Penn Shelter, which was built by BMECC and is located in The Green Diamond (Berks County) farther N or compass E.

I have hiked that whole section and it is a great hike really. Along the way you hit great lookouts like the North Lookout, Bake Oven Knob, and into Mnt Minsi of Mnt Tammaney. Too bad the NJ side of this will be closed in about a week.
