I have an Eagles Nest hammock and it's served me well for a few years now. I kept seeing people with HHs and I decided to get in on it. So I got myself a Hennessey Ultralite Backpacker Hammock. I was severly unimpressed for the following reasons-

1. The "webbing" straps are tiny. If you want to wrap it around a tree, you'd better find two that are no thicker than a baseball bat. They're nearly worthless. ENO's slapstraps are a superior design. They're long and a hell of a lot easier to use and that leads me to-

2. Setting it up is laughable compared to the ENO. You have to lash or tie knots when the ENO has biners to you just clip to the loops on the slapstraps. HH says you can set it up in two minutes. I flat out don't believe it.

3. It looks good when it comes neatly folded in the stuff sack. Enjoy it because it's nearly impossible to get it back in the stuff sack. The ENO packs into it's own attached stuff sack easily.

4. It feels like you are sleeping on some kind of cable in the HH. The ENO doesn't have that centerline thing/cable digging into your back. Maybe I didn't have it set up right, I don't know.

5. Getting into it is a hoot too. What a terrible design. Sitting in the opening to take off your boots squeezes your legs together and is uncomfortable ENO you just hop in over the side. It's much easier for taking boots off because you can sit in it like a lounger without having to go through untying the cable that holds the fly on the inside.

All in all, I give the HH a thumbs down. I already got rid of mine. Sure, the ENO doesn't have the bug net or fly attached but for ease of use it beats the HH hands down.

I hae a new Speer Winter Tarp (http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/Tarps.htm) already and a Speer SnugFit Underquilt (http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/SnugFit.htm) on the way to go with it. Life is good off the ground. :D

No more stupid than laying uncomfortably on the cold, hard ground with rocks and roots. :p

The HH is my basecamp hammock, if i am somewhere where i dont have to carry it in a pack. the Eno is hands down better for backpacking, provided bugs are not in season or you have a bug net remedy.

other than that, i agree with you zoid.

I've not tried the ENO, but I have many comfortable nights in my HH so let me add a couple counter-points for balance.

(1) You exaggerate a bit - straps work fine on trees up to a pretty decent diameter, up to about 15in diameter. I would tend not to choose larger / older trees anyway due to the risk of them shedding branches in a storm. Hennessy sells longer straps if you need them.

(2) Hennessy may exaggerate the two minutes thing, I've not timed myself, so believe what you want. All I know for sure is I'm usually fully set up before the folks I'm hiking with have their tents set up. Two minutes? Three minutes? First couple times I did have to fiddle a bit, but that's typical for anything new as you learn it. I'm not out there to race. The ENO system looks neat though.

(3) My HH Backpacker goes into its stuff sack quickly & easily. I use snakeskins. Not sure why yours didn't?

(4) & (5) Your experience is opposite mine. No idea why.

Glad you found a hammock you enjoy. This is a perfect example of why it's great there are different styles and brands -- something to fit everyone's preferences.

BTW, how is the ENO for side-sleepers? That's the part I like the HH for the most, with the design such that you sleep on the diagonal, laying on my side is very comfortable.

.......BTW, how is the ENO for side-sleepers? That's the part I like the HH for the most, with the design such that you sleep on the diagonal, laying on my side is very comfortable.I lay asymmetrically in my ENO DoubleNest and can lay almost totally flat. I'm a side-sleeper, too and laying on my side in that hammock hasn't been a problem. Once I'm on the asym and pretty flat getting on to my side and in my "happy place" to drift off to sleep isn't a problem at all. :D

Just spent last week having to sleep in a tent on the ground instead of my HH. Now I am trying to recover. Never again!
