View Full Version : Who Cares Where Jester Is??

when most people visit my hometown, washington dc, they like to take in the historical majesty of this city. many visit the monuments to our country and it's founders, or perhaps take in a museum to be awed by the ancient works of man.

the case was no different for our very own jester. he called me yesterday to report that he had some time to kill b/t trains and could be found at the capitol city brewery, indeed one of the finest commemorations to modern ingenuity.

jester was on the first leg of his journey yesterday; today likely finds him on a train somewhere between chicago & california.

best of luck dude, we'll miss you while you're gone!

OK, I care a little. I was thinking of sending him something. Perhaps pieces from a set, where all the little pieces don't weigh much but added together weigh a lot.

Maybe little lead Civil War soldiers?
Pieces of a stone chess set?
Some kind of wood puzzle?

At first glance I thought this said he was on his first keg of his journey... I guess that was also true.

Just got a call from Jester. He arrived in Chicago and has a couple of hours before his connection to LA. Did that earthquake during the night out there have anything to do with his passing through that part of the county? I wonder.

That would be a great idea. One encyclopedia at a time? :)

Or a locked combination box, with something interesting inside. Give the numbers over several drops:D.

Jester is currently in Venice Beach, pumpin' iron & gettin' all tatted up. Heading south towards the border tomorrow, where I will eat Taco Bell & start hiking. Love to all the chaps!

Jester is currently in Venice Beach, pumpin' iron & gettin' all tatted up.

And apparently not using the proper SPF. I spoke to him last night & he indicated he had achieved somewhat of a "base sunburn" during his first day on Venice Beach. He also suffered a crisis of conscience when he was confronted with unbelievably cheap & cool Mexican tchotchkes for sale. Since space is at a premium for our intrepid PCT hiker, he was forced to say no to a ginuwine Mexican wrestling mask. I think we can all appreciate the not-so-small sacrifice this represents for a man who likes nothing better than to acquire unique and interesting headgear. (Incidentally, anyone who has mastered Photoshop may want to take that to heart...)

He also mentioned to me that he is kind of known for sending utterly useless & ridiculous packages to his "friends" when they are hiking, strictly for his evil enjoyment. In case anyone would be interested in sending him a big old box of payback, he has kindly posted his scheduled maildrops in the PCT forum, and I think everyone who has ever been the butt (ouch) of a Jester Joke Package should kindly return the favor.

And let's try to keep this thread going so he knows how much we miss him & are thinking of him & all that other crap.

Happy Earth Day.

Jester just called me. He's in Laguna and is hiking with Laces (whose name may change to cache killer) and another girl whose name I don't think I can put on here. Sounds like he's having a great time and is feeling good. He'll call again when he gets to Warner Springs - in about 80 miles.

Well, we can call her "SOL" and let people come to their own conclusions. She also goes by the name "Nice Leg". I believe Laces was an 06' AT Sobo. Jester is a smart man to team up with 2 nice females. How long they will tolerate his shenanigans is another story.:)

Laces was almost also known as the librarian at the adzpctko according to a few people. She is a great person and a '06 2000miler, I believe there are actually somewhere around 7 or 8 '06ers who are pcting this year. Some of you currently on the AT may have met Glo-Worm who did Springer to Damascus as his warm up, he is also an '06er I got a message from him yesterday that he was in Warner Springs. But I got to meet Jester at the KO this year and it was a great time, if I had some boots I probably would have headed out a ways with them.

Jester is in Warner Springs, where hikers soak both their feet and their livers. Took a zero yesterday and am leaving today. Still hiking with SOL, but Laces and J.B. are both a bit ahead. Now also hiking around Too Obtuse and Breather; we all shared a room along with SamIAm and Origami (who are heading home today).

Still having a great time in the high desert. I'll post again when I can.

Jester called me Saturday evening. He was in a motel in Warner Springs, got a shower and feels good. He'll be doing laundry and supplying there and then heading off hiking again. He's doing really well and is with 3 or 4 other hikers. He was hiking for a few days with Laces, but she's gone on ahead. He'll be in Idyllwild probably this Friday and will call again from there. I'll keep you posted.

Jester called me this morning. He got into Idyllwild last night. Had originally planned to take a zero day today, but decided to hike on. He's hiking with SOL, As Advertised, Too Obtuse and HR Huff-n-Puff (formerly Breather). A couple of other hikers, Panama and Ratzo, are also close by. His blisters are getting better. Had to do some road hiking to avoid the San Jacinto fires. He plans to be in Big Bear City around May 14. He also wanted to give a big THANK YOU to the hikers who supply the water caches out there - he's very grateful to them for their unbelievably hard work in getting water to the caches.

Jester is at Mojave River Fork Reservoir Dam on Route 173. A trail angel named Marlene had just brought them cold sodas. Temperature is in the 100's - very hot and windy. Yesterday he was at Deep Creek Hot Springs and got a chance to soak his blistered feet and take a swim. He's hiking with SOL, As Advertised, HR Huff-n-Puff, Doc and Marty, Smooth Criminal, Spider Woman, Coop and Old School. They had just gone through what he says should be called rattlesnake alley since they were hiking around hundreds of rattlesnakes. He expects to be in Wrightwood on Friday and then at the Saufleys a couple of days after that. Hike's going well and he's having a great time - what a surprise.

Talked to Jester last night, he is in the town of Wrightwood, CA> His feet are doing better, but he was chased off the trail by a pretty fierce snowstorm around 8000 feet. Everyone in his group made it off the mountain safely, and are now resting in town for today. Apparently heading north will be a problem, as the next mountain (its the big one in the desert section and has a hyphenated name - PCTers, help me out with this.) is completly snowed in. Some other hikers in town had tried to climb it but turned around because the trail was impassable. If it warms up, he might try the hike, otherwise it will be a long road-walk around.

It is Baden-Powell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Baden-Powell_%28California%29) (aka the Boy Scout mountain).

A walk around would indeed be long; but so would post-holing through snow. :O

Wow, what a difference a year makes on the PCT. Last year the mountain was snow free. He is smart in taking his time. I can't believe some folks are approaching Kennedy Meadows already. Not sure what they're gonna do.

Sounds to me like Jester knows what he's doing.

Well, I sort of know what I'm doing sometimes. But what's been definitively proven by science is that I either know where I am but not how fast I'm going, or I know my speed but not where I am.

And I know where I am right now -- at the Saufley's in Agua Dulce. Did indeed have to roadwalk the closed section of Route 2 around Baden-Powell. A lot of hikers managed to get to the top, but couldn't find the route down the other side and turned back to town, and a number of others bailed off the side and bushwacked (snow whacked?) off the side and down chutes to Route 2. While here I finally heard of hikers making it over.

Rough on Route 2 -- lots of rockfall, snow on the road, and fog that dropped the temp during the day from 57 degrees down to 31. Freezing and wet that night, and slept in a picnic area parking lot, but we made it through.

Finished with the western trending San Gabriels now, heading north to the Mojave, where I will switch once again from complaining about the cold to complaining about the heat.

Have seen a Mojave Green Rattler, but am still in search of Shark With Hands. . .

Jester called home on Sunday. He had hiked 24 miles the previous day - some of it night hiking until 10:30 - to get to the Andersons. The Andersons were sitting in their car on the trail waiting for him and kept blinking their lights as soon as they could see his headlamp to let him know he was almost there. It was a very long day. He's hiking with As Advertised and SOL and Sly is also at the Andersons. Jester's feet are pretty well healed and he's doing well. He'll probably be leaving the Andersons today and the next town he'll be in is Mojave in about 4 to 5 days.

I'm not sure I'm at all interested in this adventure. It's just too out there--the high desert, being chased off a mountain by snow, and the added introduction of that ruffian Sly. I'd much rather prefer a tale about a balding, middle-aged, cubicle denizen working for a canned goods distributor, perhaps Campbell's Soup.

I do applaud your efforts to keep us updated, but I think it might be a better story if this Jester character took a detour. Maybe he could save the day at the Campbell's Regional Office by getting an emergency shipment of tomato soup to Papa's Country Store in Lake Hughes?

Saayyy, does Jester have a can opener?

De gustibus non est disputandum...
Camo, whose tastes are we talking about?
Jester
OR
the "cool hiker chicks"?

found this translation on wikipedia:
"there is not to be discussion regarding tastes"

de gustibus non est disputandum
"there is not to be discussion regarding tastes"
Less literally "In matters of taste there is no dispute" or simply "There's no arguing taste". A similar expression in English is "There's no accounting for taste". Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, without attribution, renders the phrase as de gustibus non disputandum; the verb "to be" is often assumed in Latin, and is rarely required.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_gustibus_non_est_disputandum

Hey PT,

Jester, the Baltimore Jack pack like hiker on the PCT. (I found the bourbon)

I'm doing OK (I think), tired of the desert (been there, done that), spending some extra time at Casa de Luna (a truly unique experience on any trail) before skipping to Kennedy Meadows.

Jester called home on Friday night, 6/6, and was in Mojave, CA, so was through the main hot stretch of the Mojave Desert. He's hiking with Smooth Criminal, Coyote, Lost, Warner Springs Monty, Leslie (an ALDHA person) and Marty McFly. Squatch showed up and will meet them again at Kennedy Meadows and hike with them for a few days. As Advertised had been hiking with him, but he is having a foot problem and stayed at the Andersons. Jester, of course, has had some adverntures, including climbing over a fence topped with barbed wire - but I digress - and I'm sure he'll want to tell you about that part of the story himself. They walked through Angelope Valley which he said was the most incredibly windy place he's ever been. On Friday, they hiked along a lot of wind farms and when he was filming Leslie, he wasn't using his hiking poles and got blown over several times, but luckily did not damage his camera, although that part of his film should be interesting. Jester expected to be in Onyx, CA, in 4 or 5 days, but called again yesterday to say they were not stopping in Onyx since no one had any packages to pick up there. His feet are healed and he's having a great time. Will call again in another week or so.

After returning from Trail Days the some what broken Jester needed repairs. Here are some pics of Jester under repairs for his broken neck, broken legs, and peeling skin. He is not fully recovered yet as you can see in the last two pictures he needs assistance with a back brace to stand straight. After traction hopefully he will be free standing once again and be able to attend the Billville feed. At least he has a nice view of the river from Mary's balcony while in traction!

Jester called home on Sunday, 6/15, and was at Kennedy Meadows. To get there, they had to hike through a browned out area and had no shade at all - he said it was pretty hot. He was actually calling from Ridge Crest which is about 25 miles from KM since he couldn't get phone service at Kennedy Meadows. I had mailed a big box of Tastykakes and other treats to him which he picked up at KM, so he and the other hikers devoured them on Saturday night - some had never heard of Tastykakes which Jester thought was pretty funny. There was a fire just north of them and firemen were escorting hikers on the trail. The firemen were now saying it was okay so some hikers took off and were trying to get through the area. Jester's heading out of Kennedy Meadows on Monday and will be starting through the Sierras - and back to cold weather. He'll try to call next week from Independence, CA

Jester just called. He was at the top of Mount Whitney, about 14,480 feet, to watch the sun rise. He said it was spectacular. They started hiking from Guitar Lake at 2:00 a.m. and got to the top just before the sun came up. As he was talking to me, he was precariously balanced on the eastern face of the mountain to make the call. Coyote went up to the top last night and camped there. Jester's with Ratatouille, Smooth Criminal, Dave and Huff-N-Puff. They're going over Forester Pass tomorrow and down the other side. He'll probably be in Independence, CA on Sunday and will call from there. He sounds really good and is, of course, having a great time.

As of Monday, 6/23, Jester was in Independence, CA. After being on Mt. Whitney watching the sunrise last Friday, staying up there a couple of hours and playing Twister while up there, he went through Forester Pass, through Kings Canyon, which he said was absolutely the most gorgeous place he has ever seen, then on to Kearsarge Pass, through Onion Valley and into Independence. He's hiking with Squatch, Coyote, Ratatouille and Gazelle. SOL and Marty McFly are a day behind them, so they've probably caught up by now. They heard someone had died on Whitney a day or two after they had been there. A ranger told them someone collapsed and the rangers did CPR, but the person died. In the small world category - at Kearsarge Pass, there was a group of day hikers and Jester got talking to one of them whose trail name was Honey Bear. He said he had hiked the PCT in 1996 and the best trail name he ever heard was Blister Sister. Jester, of course, said he knew her, but Honey Bear said there must be more than one hiker with that name. Jester said, no, I think there's only one. Honey Bear said he remembers Blister Sister and Fiddlehead. Anyway, Jester's next stop will be Tuolumne Meadows, CA, probably around 7/3. He's doing great and is having a great time.

His next stop will be Echo Lake in about 7 days and then South Tahoe Lake in about 11 days. He's having a great hike, but was sorry that he had to miss the Billville Feed in Duncannon this past weekend. He sounds great and will probably be hiking out of TM today.

Wow, great news, he's doing REALLY well. Just cleared the hardest section of the PCT. Rumor has it he's been hiking with Squatch. Could make for a great reality show watching those two.

Glad to hear he is feeling better. Seems a lot of people get sick coming into Mammoth-not sure what it's all about. I spent a week there sick last summer.

Echo Lake and South Lake Tahoe are the same spot, so I'd imagine he'll arrive there in a week and change. He's headed through Yosemite now, a beautiful, if, tedious section of PCT.

Go Jester!

Jester called last night, 7/15. He's in South Lake Tahoe, is hiking about 28 miles a day and is feeling good. He's hiking with Coyote, Ratatouille, Smooth Criminal and Dave. SOL caught up to them yesterday in South Lake Tahoe, but they don't know where Marty McFly is. Jester said this is the point in the hike where some hikers start doing crazy things. Two hikers left South Lake Tahoe yesterday - Don't Panic and Nick - Nick hiked out with 50 hard boiled eggs in his pack and Don't Panic hiked out with 50 frozen hot dogs in his pack and 50 buns strapped to the outside of his pack - all the food they'll be eating until they get to Truckee in about 4 days. They decided if they've eaten all of it by the time they get there, they're going to rename themselves Cool Hand Luke (Don't Panic) and Kobayashi (Nick) - the Nathan's hot dog eating champion. Wouldn't want to be near either one of them when they reach Truckee - I don't think it's going to be pretty. Another hiker who shall remain nameless - and no, it wasn't Jester - has hiked all of the Sierra passes naked, with pictures to prove it. Anyway, there's a fire north of South Lake Tahoe - the Plumas fire - and apparently the PCT is closed at that point and there is no alternate route. Jester was going to go on the fire website today and figure out what to do when they get there. They've heard that they're shuttling people around the fire, but they're hoping they don't have to do that. He said it's been very hazy because of the fires. They've been caught in a couple of bad thunderstorms - one with hail - but other than that, everything seems to be going well. He was hoping he'd see a bear - from a distance, of course - around Glen Aulin where they camped one night - Squatch told them they'd be almost guaranteed to see one there - but no luck. He'll be in Truckee probably by Saturday, 7/19, and then in Belden, CA around the 24th.

Jesters Mom
07-16-2008, 16:54
Sly: I think Jester was hiking out of SLT today. He'll be in Truckee around Saturday. If you called his cell, he probably hadn't emptied out all the crazy messages he got from the feed in Duncannon. When I talked to him last night, he told me he had about 10 messages from everybody from the Doyle that Saturday night. I'll call him and tell him to empty it if he hasn't already. At the feed, somebody said you were in SLT and were hiking south hoping to run into him. He said he hadn't seen you and was surprised when I told him you were supposed to be out there. Did your plans change? I just called him and happened to get him. He emptied his voice mail yesterday, so he said to give him a call. He's got his phone turned on. He's hoping you're out there and that he'll run into you. They're still in SLT, but they'll probably be hiking out some time today. They're trying to find out about the fires north of them before they head out.

Hey y'all! I'm at the Heitman's in Old Station, CA, at mile 1377 or so. The Plumas fire caused us to detour around, missing Belden, which has completely messed me up as far as maildrops go, but things are getting back to normal. Finally saw a bear on the day I went into Chester -- not too big, and it ran like hell when it saw me so I got no film of it. Unlike the Twister game on Whitney. Got about an hour's worth of video of that fiasco.

Squatch & SOL are currently Southbounding from Castella to Burney Falls SP, and we're nighthiking the Hat Creek Rim tomorrow night (we being Huff 'n' Puff, Breezeway, and myself). Naturally we've got dozens of glow sticks to attach to ourselves, as well as some strobing red lights.

We'll look like UFOs.

Fires have cut down on the available scenery (too smoggy), but the trail is great and I'm having a wonderful time. Got to go -- have to look up info on how to get around the next fire -- between Etna & Seiad Valley.

PS -- Got a look at the Post Office Register from 1996 in Sierra City. Took a photo of the page where Blister Sister, Bulldog, & Fiddlehead signed in. Pretty Cool.

Well, I suppose it's a crappy year if you're not hiking with me. It's actually been an awesome year for PCT hiking, from what I can tell -- despite the fires in CA.

Currently in Etna, CA, poised to make my escape from the entirely too long state of California. They opened the trail north of here in Klamath yesterday, thus proving that a) I have amazing timing AND b) everyone ahead of me is going too fast for their own good.

I'm at the Hikers' Hut at Alderbrook Manor, a very cool place whose owners, Dave & Vicki, are very kind and welcoming. Definitely stop by here if you're ever hiking through the charmingly named "Section P."

Our Tron-inspired nighthike of the Hat Creek Rim went well, though we did startle (and were startled by) a number of cows during the "where the heck are we and where's the trail?" portion of the evening, around 2AM.

Since then we've been churning out the miles -- did back-to-back 30s yesterday and the day before, saw a mountain lion, drank a fair amount of beer at the Castella Chevron, watched a helicopter put out a fire, and saw an awe-inspiring sunset yesterday (before donning the headlamp and putting in 7 more miles).

Next up -- pancakes in Seiad and travlin' on to Oregon.

Crappy? Nah.

Missed Jester's phone call today, but he left a message. He passed the 2000 mile mark yesterday - Yea! He spent yesterday and today hiking through lava fields - got hit with a snowstorm about 4 days ago, which slowed them down a bit and has put him a day or two behind schedule. He just went around the PCT version of Mt. Washington and will be going over Three Finger Jack shortly. He plans on being at the Timberline Lodge in 3 or 4 days to stock up on some snacks, etc., and will try to call from there. He says everything is great.

Jester called yesterday from Cascade Locks, OR. He arrived there just before 5:00 on Monday and was able to get to the post office and pick up his mail. He's done 2,155 miles so far. He hiked three 30-mile days to get to the Timberline Lodge on the side of Mt. Hood - for the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet. He said it was great and I'm sure they didn't make much money from the dozen or so hikers who were there for it. He's been hiking with Huff-N-Puff and has caught up with Ratatouille and Coyote who had been two days ahead since Ashland, OR. He's doing great and is scheduled to be in Skykomish, WA around the 20th of Sept.

My friend Warner Springs Monty has a trailjournal and has a picture of Jester from the other day. Seems like a bunch of them went to a hot spring somewhere near Portland. That Portland vortex is tough to get out of!

Jester is in Packwood/White Pass. He called last night and has hiked just over 2300 miles and is very excited to be nearing the end. He's having a great time and is doing well - although he's very thin from the picture I saw last week. His last mail drop will be in Stehekin, WA 98852 in case anybody wants to send him a card or something.

This is the first time that I have been able to sit down and read through the entire thread. I sent our boy a package out today and took it upon myself to add a couple of things so Billville will be present at the end
something from mathewski
something from Baltimore Jack
something in honor of his mom
and of course something from me
I didn't have anytime to bake something special but the tasty treat I left in his package could last longer that his lifetime - it really is tasty if you can admit to eating one. Any guesses????
And finally any guesses on how big Jester's weiner is????

This care package should hopefully put a smile on Jesters face and hopefully prompt a couple of border pictures........

I'm heading out hiking for 4 days in NH starting on sunday anyone around????

im prepareing to bring the full weight of my weird intellegence to bare on the unique problem of jesters maildrop. heres what we know about what ill be wrapping up later today and sending to another coast. we know the matthewski works best under the tutaladge of the dude and since hes comming over, we'll work on this together. the dude and i have colaborated before on trail related hoax and dagger fun and we will come up with a winner. im thinking large. and useless. and confusing. like my bike. i wish i could. hows about i send a whole salmon in dry ice. he will be forced to cook it. what about a air conditioner or a washer. does he need a chair from ikea? how bout snails. in a can. maby ill just send him a bunch of whippets and a charger and ballon. or a book on fungus. whatever it be, it will suck really bad and be a huge inconveinyence. o! a mini fridge!

Matty: Not too late if you mail it to Stehekin, WA 98852. He's running a couple of days late so your package should get there in time. I still haven't mailed the box of goodies to you. I'll be away for a week starting Saturday, so if I don't get them to you before that, I will definitely mail you a box as soon as I get back. I'm trying to get a last box together to send to Jester before I leave and time is running out. And, you better plan on coming to a party at my house after Jester gets home. You missed the last one, so I won't take no for an answer. No excuses. Love you.

If by "Jester's weiner" you mean the summer sausage that's been in my food bag for the last 5 days, then that would be about 8 inches. If you're talking about anything else you'll have to find out on your own.

I'm at Snowqualmie Pass right now, just over the 2400 mile mark. Since White Pass we've been hit by two different storm systems, dumping mostly rain but occasionally snow and hail depending on the elevation. Temps between 30 and 40 degrees every day. So not that fun, and all of the low lying clouds prevented any views of Rainier.

Thank God for Ulrich Camp in Government Meadow, where Tex & Karen and I spent the night before last. Chopped wood, built a fire in the stove there, and dried out and warmed up.

But don't feel too bad for me, 'cause there's a hot tub where I'm staying tonight, and I'm going to make use of it as soon as I finish this post.

Less than two weeks to go now. The weather window is closing, with more storms tomorrow and Thursday. Time to finish this thing up. . .

Tex and Karen are getting a lift to Seattle or North Bend to get some warmer clothing. The weather has been terrible, but he finally got dried out. The forecast is for two days of rain, then four days of nice weather and more storms on Tuesday. He expects to be in Skykomish on Friday and then Stehekin next Tuesday.

WARNING TO EVERYONE!

Apparently, if you're on the East Coast Geek can hear your thoughts. Break out the tinfoil hats!

Spent the past week eating and sleeping. And showering. Recovering from my hike and, you know, the Gathering.

Thanks to everyone who followed along and kept in touch, and thanks especially to those who sent me care packages.

Ultimately, though, there are a few people to thank who made the hike possible. And that would be
a) Jester's Mom and
b) Firefighters

Thanks!

As for the question you all want to ask, the answer is no.
