I am trying to choose a tent and cannot decide between the MSR HubbaHubba or the BA Seedhouse SL2

I just got the seedhouse several weeks ago and used it for 4 nights in the Shenandoah in cool, wet weather. It was great, very light, not as fragile as some of the online reviews make it out to be. It's a 2-person tent in theory but that would be really tight. Fine for one though. I imagine the HubbaHubba is great too, but I think the seedhouse might be a little lighter.

Well I really liked our hubba hubba, but I have heard good things about the seedhouse too. Either way!.

My significant other and I have the Seedhouse. We normally sleep in a queen sized bed (he's a sprawler). He found the Seedhouse to be a very tight fit. Good thing we're quite comfortable sleeping with each other's limbs thrown over the other's head. (Though it is usually me who elbows him in the face in my sleep.)

I'm short and could sit up with ease at the apex of the tent. But the two of us could not sit side-by-side cross-legged because there just wasn't room.

Super easy to set up, though.

And we're keeping it :) He'll just have to learn not to sprawl.

IIRC, the Hubba weighs a bit more. I'm a wee little thing, so I really need to keep my pack weight down. The 1/3rd body rule makes my pack max out at 30 lbs (with food), so the Seedhouse was the better choice for me.

My wife and I have a hubba hubba, we like it because the doors on both sides that allow you to enter/exit without having to crawl over the other person through a front door. With the fly makes a nice two sided vestibule too.

Setting up the tent alone is extremely fast; we are able to do it in about a minute, and the fly only takes about a minute more as well. The main body is mesh which is very nice on a cloudless summer night without the fly - or it can be set up with just the fly and a footprint as a quick shelter if needed. However, it definitely is not a good winter tent for these reasons.

I do think it weighs more than the SL2. Best thing is to see if you can try both and find what you like best. Good luck!

I read your other post and after having experience with the Seedhouse and realizing that no matter how close you are to your dad, you probably don't want his elbow in your face as you sleep, I'm going to advise you to skip the SL2. It will be too small.

Best of luck. :)

I have the hubba hubba and its great. Dont know about the Seedhouse though. One thing I dont like about the hubba hubba is the color. I have the 08 model and the rainfly is babycrap yellow, so it could be hard to stealth.

Look at the Big Agnes Emerald Mountain. It is basically the seedhouse but with a rectangular floor that gives more room. Hubby and I have a SL3 and love it. But I have to say if I was doing it all over again (making a tent decision) I would probably get a tarptent -- they are less packed weight.

I recently picked up the sl2 to have for friends while I use my hubba hubba or vice versa. The differences I see are the sl2 is noticeably smaller. The hubba hubba is heavier but they now offer a newer version that has dropped a few ounces. If you're not crazy about weight the old one is cheaper now. Although they both setup up similarly I think the hubba hubba is an easier and quicker setup especially when it comes to the fly section. Having the two doors is a nice luxury as well having two vestibules to open one side and leave the other closed for wind or ventilation. Like them both but just some observations. Eric

renman,
along the lines of mamacat's suggestion, have you given any thought about the BA SL3? under 4 lbs by an ounce and only an ounce heavier than the hubba hubba. price tag is a bit higher, but if money isn't a question it's worth looking into

I own a hubba hubba and like it. I am not sure of the year model, but it is orange. It is very quick and easy to set up. The feature I like the best is the vestibule on either side. The side entry really simplifies entering and exiting the tent, and it provides a dry place for my gear. Two 6' males can sleep comfortably. It has kept me dry in the rain, although I have never experienced a severe storm in it.
