There is a couple developments in the works around Unaka. The best one is on Red Fork Road just before USFS 230 starts.
Wolf Laurel if they got the cash.
There is some kind of development being slowly worked on Dennis Cove/Walnut Mountain Roads. It has a great view of Frog Level and White Rocks.

Nice Mt. cottage for sell on Hester Gap Rd. off of Hwy 129 just 5 miles south of Neel's Gap. If interested PM me for details.
I'm gathering that he doesn't want to have any neighbors, but there is a place for sale down the street from me. Definitely not a 'mountain home', but it is a home in the mountains.
My neighbors house is for sale. It is a very nice cabin located about 100 yds from the trail.

Thanks guys. I'll show my friend tomorrow and see what she thinks. I told her this was the best website for getting anything, but, especially something like this, done.
Howdy.
This is my first post here. Woot!
Anyway . . . I own acreage adjacent to the trail near Sam's Gap.

There are a few properties for sale along my road (Roaring Fork Rd). I think there's a 50 acre, a 70 acre, and then something much smaller with a house (at the head of the road). We're across the interstate from Wolf Laurel . . . we got in early . . . . but now properties in the area are about $10,000 per acre.
Beautiful area though.
Here's the view from 3800 ft, right at my house-site.

If your friend needs a realtor's number . . . I really like the guy we dealt with (and could PM a phone number).

What do the taxes run?

What do the taxes run?
Without pulling up the listings to look exactly i would say they are going to be somewhere between $15,000 to $20,000 a year. Now both of these properties sit out in the town not the village so for all those taxes you get......Well water, Septic, county sheriff, volunteer fire, no trash pick up but you can buy a dump sticker for $250. Yep this is a deal killer a lot of times.

My wife and I just bought land up in Barnardsville. 4.5 acres, very nice. I'd like to plug our realtor, Greybeard Realty, in Black Mountain, they were excellent, and can help you with listings in NC near the AT. We looked all around Marshall, Hot Springs, and Mars Hill (including a few lots near Max Patch and Roaring Fork area).
Here is a realtor we did not deal with, but the search engine for MLS listings is very good:

I used this search to narrow down what we were hoping to find, so it might be useful to you as well. Good luck!
BTW, our taxes are only 400/yr. Buncombe County.
