View Full Version : Standing Indian Loop

Skidsteer and I are planning a three day hike around the Standing Indian loop over Memorial Day weekend.
Basically the hike starts at the kiosk at the parking lot in Standing Indian campground, takes the Kimsey Creek Trail up to the AT at Deep Gap, then runs the AT north over Standing Indian and Albert Mtns, then picks up the Long Branch Trail at Glassmine Gap and returns to the parking lot. IIRC it's about 33, maybe 34 miles. I can say it's some fairly moderate trail; there is the grade up to Standing Indian, and the scramble up Albert Mtn is a classic, but overall some pretty mild hiking.
So far no detailed planning. I'm proposing kicking off at the kiosk at 10:00 AM Saturday morning.
Come on and get away from your computer for the weekend!

If I'm healed up enough, I'd like to go. It will be cutting it kinda close though.
I'd love to do that section. I did the Kimsey instead of the Albert Mountain route to get to Franklin to help out there.
I see you live in Marietta, Roswell here. Possible ride share?
I'll keep you posted.

That is a very nice loop for a weekend. If you are up for a real climb, try the lower ridge trail up Standing Indian instead of the wussy Kimsey Creek Trail. Pretty much straight up with few markings, no water and no end in sight.

i think the kimsey creek trail is nice, how could you not like a water trail?i would hike this sobo and finish on the k.c.t. have a great weekend...
I think the mileage is more like 22-24. When I hiked it in March, it took about 14 hours of hiking, total, which included generous rest stops (cooked lunch), and waiting for a friend who had overpacked. (He had a wooden stool! And a Coleman lantern!!!) You'll have plenty of time to play.

Nothing not to like with KCT, just that the lower Ridge Trail is a major gonad crusher. I don't recall a single view until you got to the summit.
It is a hell of a lot of fun running down with light pack.

I dunno, already committed for the weekend of the Standing Indian loop, so it won't be that one. I have to work this Saturday. Then I am taking the wife out of town for some adult time the next weekend. Then to my sister's high school graduation the next weekend. Then work again the following weekend. So it is looking like first week of June for me to be out again for an overnight anyway. And I am seriously considering the Hogpen to Unicoi AT section with my daughter that weekend. What can anyone here tell me about that section? Not to hi jack the thread or anything!?!? She can handle 7 or 8 miles per day. We did the Neels to Hogpen section one year ago in 6 hours, so she is a fairly decent hiker for a 7 year old.

LOL, ok, her and I have talked and we think she can handle the Hogpen to Unicoi section in a weekend. I know now that her old dad can. It seems pretty flat with two climbs, one in the beginning, one at the end. The descent into Unicoi Gap looks brutal on the elevation map, so I gotta know. I wonder if Springer parking lot like over to somewhere 10 or 11 miles past there would be better for her. It doesn't work as pretty logistically for us with gas at $3.61 per gallon and possibly $4 by then for someone to have to come shuttle us that far away from home. The Unicoi Gap option is much better from that viewpoint. The thru hikers I asked about that section this week were all pretty much clueless. You've seen her hike TS, what do you think, 8 miles day one, 6 miles day two? She can handle it I think.

Oh yeah, I was thinking she carries her bag, her hammock, her water, and her toiletries. Dad carries all the food, etc. I think I can keep her close to 9 or 10 pounds. She weighs about 60 or 65, so I am thinking that is fairly good.

David and I are in the planning stages for that weekend. A friend is setting up a trip to do a section of the Foothills Trail that I haven't hiked yet, but also planning low miles.
The thing is, I really need to be covering some ground to prepare for hiking with a couple of young folks in Glacier in June. A leisurely Mem. Day stroll is probably not what I should be doing to get ready to hit the CDT with two spring chickens.

My first jaunt in the woods a couple of weeks ago for a few days in north GA was top shelf, and I'm looking forward to more (a week in July!). I envy you guys. This is one of my favorite areas. In fact, probably MY favorite, within a short distance of Atlanta. Late May and Early June is particularly spectacular with the rhododendron and native azaleas in bloom.
If you have any time to kill a short side trip over to Pickens Nose is a nice add-on.
Added bonus is the ability to just use one car and do a full loop in and out of S.I. Campground. Have fun and give us a trip report !

Speaking of views, your opinion here. I am thinking of starting to try to sell some of my pictures. If I start it as a business, I could write off all my hiking expenses, gas to trailheads, etc. Think there is a market for mountain views in print? Or is that market like over saturated? Just a thought that entered my mid today when I was supposed to be working!!
Sell em on Ebay. Larry, TOW is trying to sell some of mine.

Well, seeing that you appointed an MOI, why don't you appoint an entertainment director as well? They would be able to roll the keg along with hauling the pool table. Maybe a board of directors for laughs? This is about hiking, right? LOL:D
Should be interesting conversation at the restaurant for sure with all of you slightly psychotic hikers.

Well, actually the MotI kinda volunteered, and didn't have the good sense to call in sick when Skids and I shanghai'd the poor boy.
However, there is the germ of a good idea in all that. What say we put the pool table on top of the kegs, and use the kegs as rollers? That'll make pushing the pool table up Standing Indian much easier and will also make the kegs multi-use, which we all know is the core concept of lightweight hiking.

First, I have my hands full as the spiritual advisor to this sorry band of misfits. Second, what makes you think I'd show up if the keg was in my truck. Last, even if I did show up we're carpooling with Ghosthiker, so we'd have to find some poor soul to tag as the bozo who forgot the beer.

I was thinking, if ya gonna carry beer that far, at the very least get some beer that is decent!! I mean, I can drink the PBR if I have too. But if I am carrying a case of beer 5.5 miles over two 4000 feet mountains, it's gonna be some damn good beer!!

Got back yesterday from taking Lady Bug, Yellow Bug, and 3 friends to Standing Indian Campground. The women (2 5yo's and 3 dolts) car camped down in the Campground and had a very big time.
I took them up Standing Indian from Deep Gap parking lot shortly before noon. 2 Kindergarten kids took 2.5 hours to get up there, but much less to come down. It was a gorgeous day in the 60-70's with a bit of a breeze. I went back up after showing 2 of the adults Kimsey Creek trail, which they enjoyed greatly.
I used this to test gear before heading up to Maine in June. The GoLite Quest pack is very comfortable and holds much more stuff that you might imagine. I stayed comfortable and warm under tarp and my Speer Hammock with Peapod and an over quilt. A huge wind started after 2AM, but I had moved my campsite from just off the summit down to near the junction of the blue Blaze and the AT. I had a very nice time with hiker TV (campfire) and sip or two of bourbon.
I met a group of three older men enjoying one of a life time of hiking with each other, testing out one's new knee. I saw a much younger group of three men, two brothers, starting late about a week ago on their thru-hike.
I awoke to the sunrise and was on the Lower Ridge Trail by 7:30AM and enjoyed my shower. Everyone, but the little girls, have a bit of the hiker hobbles this morning.

Out of sheer curiosity would you want to come along on the Bartram if we decide to can this one? I think the Bartram trip will be a bit more difficult than the Standing Indian loop.
Roots, we'll definitely let you know.

Let me know if you bail too, so I won't be up there Saturday looking for you. If you are on the Bartram from Warwoman up to Rabun Bald, it sure looked like a tough climb coming in from the south the last time I came in from the north.

Two Speed,
I am DoughNut!!! Hear me roar!!!
OK, I sectioned Springer to NOC last year, skipped the Standing Indian Loop, went to the campground for a shower (remember the drought and heat last summer?) then picked up at Wallace Gap (??) on to NOC,
I'd planned to go to Fontana but the heat and bugs convinced me to try when it was cooler.
I am planning a thru hike in a year or two, and I am going to Maine in July to hike the 100 mile wilderness and either all of Maine of skip to the Whites, who knows?
Last November (Veteran's Day) I hiked Rock Gap to Betty Creek (Over Albert Mtn) and back to my car at Rock Gap.
I average 10-15 mpd, enjoy myself no matter what.
I am not familiar with Bartram, I plan to drive up Friday after work, I'll stay somewhere (Maybe Ron's place in Franklin) and link up for the hike.

I'm out of this one also. This has been in the works since Jan., and now that the time is at hand, the bottom fell out. I would like to hook-up and hike with some of the Georgia Whiteblazers one day when the depression is over! Keep me in mind please!
I am planning a "Halloween hike" if anyone is interested. I know that is aways off yet, but you gotta start somewhere!:D

That should be a good time of the year. Since it's a Halloween hike, do we wear costumes? I could bring some Stella and "be" TwoSpeed. :banana

My vote is to stick with the original plan(no shuttle, less driving)of the S.I. Loop.
I'll go along with whatever, though. Looks like a beautiful threes days shaping up!

I met them yesterday at Deep Gap. Couldn't have timed it much better. I pulled into Deep Gap about the time they came up the Kimsey Creek Trail. Skids is there, but Two and Skids are the only two whiteblazers on the hike. I wish I could have made the entire hike myself. The views from the Indian were absolutely awesome. Like I said, quite possibly the best views in the Southeast. My family and I hiked up to the summit and cooked supper and headed back down. We were going to do sunset on the summit and twilight hike back to the truck. But my wife hurt her foot yesterday (not on the trail) and toughed out the 5 mile in and out to the summit. Took her for an X-Ray last night and they think it is just a really bad bruise. She has broke the same foot about 8 years ago, so we wanted to be certain right away.
Anyway, best views in the Southeast maybe and the round trip from Deep Gap up to the Indian summit is probably the best hike I have been on to introduce new hikers. The grade is never tough and the couple of moderate to difficult sections never last more than a few hundred yards. My mother in law and her best friend want to hike a few times with me (yeah believe that or not) and I think when her friend comes down from DC in a few weeks I am taking them on the Indian.
Skids and TS plan on about 12 or 13 miles today, which takes them over Albert today. I look forward to hearing a report on the rest of the hike.

I was there at 10 and all alone so I took off, Went Kimsey creek and somehow got off the trail ended up on FS71 and followed it to Deep gap, then to Carter Gap for the Night.
this mornign I climbed Albert and made glassmine gap before lunch so I followed Long Branch and headed out.
I met 5 thru Hikers (Yikes) no trail names, not on WB not on TJ.
I assume I'd been stood up so I used the opportunity to train up for Maine (if it ever opens!)

Not to be argumentative but I finished YESTERDAY (Sunday) I think I was ahead of you. Did you notice the Silver Jeep Wrangler parked to the far left by the garbage cans? That is my Jeep, I was there at 8:30 and waited till 10:15. Maybe I was in the wrong place?
Anyway, I had a great time, I wanted to try a few long days and try out stuff for my trip North. everything worked out well, Did you meet an older gentleman in a 101st Airborne Hat on top of standing Indian? We hiked up from Deep gap together, I forget his name.
Met a bunch of thru hikers, no trail names, not on WB and No trail journals, just plain ol' hikers,

Good deal. Skids and I were worried. Lisa didn't look happy when ya'll headed out.
She wasn't happy, at all. I think the hour or so spent laying in the hammock up there let her foot get "stove up" some as I call it. She felt better and better as we came down the mountain. I had to force Goody's powders down her throat on the way down, but it ended up not being too awful. Good thing it is such an easy hike. I read several reviews that rated it at moderate to strenuous, I could find absolutely nothing strenuous about it. Maybe a couple of hundred yard or so sections of moderate, but nothing that anyone in half way decent shape couldn't handle.
Sure wish I could have went over Albert. Number One is begging me to take her and camp on top of the Indian. I may make the trip in five or six weeks.
Weekend after next I think I will do the section I planned on Number One and I plan on doing in Georgia. I can't make my mind up between Hogpen to Unicoi or FS42 Springer to Woody Gap. Both are pretty easy hikes I KNOW she can make easily. I am seriously considering doing the Unicoi to Hogpen southbound trek. That way we get the tough one out of the way first thing Saturday morning and can pace the rest of the trip based off that.
Then the next weekend is my birthday, no gifts please (if you need the link to my REI wish list, let me know) and father's day and we are planning a cookout at that fabulous little lookout .1 south of Tray Gap. Work the next weekend and then maybe Ellicott rock with Speed Racer the next weekend. Anyone a taker on either of the overnight hikes are welcome. But beware that both are with children, Number One is a 7 YO girl who is pretty calm when alone. Speed Racer is a rambunctious 6 year old boy. Then maybe an overnight on the Indian a few weeks later.
Looks like my entire summer is almost planned out. Now if I could only get the wife to go on an overnight!!!:D:D:D

maybe I was at the wrong place? I had a great hike, just decided to hike and enjoy myself, (which I did).
I had a weekend of mis-understandings, Ron thought I was staying at the Sapphire Inn, I was at Budget Inn Friday night.
Next time we'll make it work,

A group of 4 of us (2men and 2 women) did the Standing Indian Loop on Sunday. Some of you may have noticed those crazy run/walkers out there slacking the trail in running shoes, running shorts, and light weight packs. The weather for the weekend was awesome. It just doesn't get any better. We stayed at Standing Indian Campground and were very lucky to get a spot. After checking all 70+ sites for an opening and finding none, we stopped by the store on the way out and they told us that 1 spot just became available because someone became sick and had to leave. Never again will I count on getting in at Standing Indian on Memorial Day weekend.
Anyhow, we hit the Kimsey Creek Trail at 8:00 AM on Sunday and it took the 2 gals and myself 8-1/2 hours to get back to our campsite, including the road section from Rock Gap. I think the distance was more like 26-27 miles, but it might have been a tad shorter. We did go up to the top of Standing Indian Mountain but the views were mostly blocked by clouds and fog. Our lead runner finished 1-1/2 hours ahead of us, but he is in tremendous shape (and about 12 years younger than me). We had a few gnat problems on the section from Albert Mountain to Rock Gap late in the afternoon.
After a great cookout Sunday night, the group ddecided on Monday Memorial Day, we would go up the Long Branch Trail to Glassmine Gap and then up to the tower. We got there just as the workers were getting ready to block off the area around the firetower because they are replacing the roof. They let us climb to the top and allowed us 2 minutes on the platform before asking us to leave so they could work. The views were awesome. Then it was back down to the campground and a quick dip in the cold stream before the long drive back to FL.
