In planning for the trail (Spring '09), some friends want to meet up and hike sections with me. One guy mentioned that Hot Springs, NC was a good spot to meet and wants to throw a shin-dig.

Checking the data it seems Deer Park Mountain Shelter is the closest site. How close is that site to the town and is there anything particularly special about the region? Any other good spots in the mid-region to meet?

There's a campground in the middle of town, right on the river.
And the trail goes right through town.

So . . . it might be a nice place to pay for a night or two of campground use so you can shower and get some warm grub at the diner or the pub or the cafe.

What's special about Hot Springs is Hot Springs and the outdoor hot tubs.
Rent a hot tub for around $5 for an hour.

If you are looking at things out on the trail Rich Mountain north of town is nice. It has a fire tower with a great view. Deer park is nothing special.

Good stuff.

Follow up question: What town is a week north of there? I know it would be nice if I could give you how far I'd hike per day, but I don't know. Just some suggestions as to which towns to look at would be helpful.

I haven't hiked the AT this far, but . . . .

I would guess that Erwin, TN might be about 6 days from HotSprings.
It's the biggest town near Curley Maple Gap Shelter (from what I can see).

That help any?

There are 2 campgrounds there, the Hot Springs Campground (http://camp.nchotsprings.com/) and Creek Ridge Camping (http://www.creekridgecamping.com/). Creek Ridge is owned by friends of mine, so I would reccommend it to stay at if you want to camp. However, the hot tubs at the Hot Springs Spa, which is adjacent to the Hot Springs Campground, aren't to be missed. The next town is Erwin, TN, about 68 miles north.
