From what FD says Rick is stubborn enough to finish the trail. So, have no doubts of it whatsoever. Sounds like he misses his friend, too. He wouldn't really say what happened, but, he did say they both messed up.
Good luck to you Wrongway. I'm sure you'll do well out there.

the homeplace in catawba was SO good.no complaints from me, just the people who were there for their college gradation dinners in their shirt and ties, and then me with my grungy-dirty hiker clothes and my pack pigging out in the corner taking advantage of the AYCE!

Hey finally got to a internet connection and figured out my password problem.
Sitting in Waynesboro now at a fellow hikers friends house, really cool people, we got hooked up with a great dinner and will be taking a zero on Saturday.
Cought my 5th or 6th snake today, a 4.5 foot black snake, he was clinging to the side of a large tree, saw him as I walked pass the tree and just picked him up off the tree. He had just eaten a mouse or something and Peanut and I watch the food slide from his neck down to his belly, as we took photos holding him.
Did 21 great miles today, started t 6am and had some of the best hiking yet. Weather was great and the rock formations were some of the coolest yet!
Really having a great time, Trail days was awesome, met a lot of great people and finally found/bought a new Smartwool hat to replace the one I lost by Clingdome a few hundred miles back!
Hope you all are having a great time and able to enjoy the outdoors, Happy Hiking to all!!!

Well made it to Thorton Gap today. Got a shower, clean clothes on and about to eat!

Have seen a lot of bears, followed one we saw into the woods to get some good photos and a video. He ended up following me back to the path, medium size and really cool. Smelled funky, of course I'm one to talk!

Yesterday we saw a mother and her 2 cubs by a spring. I went down to get water with Erwin and as I was setting up the Hiker pro pump, Erwin was just looking straight ahead, I glanced over to see what it was and there was a bear by the tree. I got out the camera and walked over to it, the bear did a low growl and walked away but then returned, I walked a little closer to get some more shots. Then the bear walk away, grunted, stomped its feet and walked back towards the tree again. Walked a little closer and this made the bear run up the tree. Peanut was watching Erwin who was just chilled out and keeping an eye on me. I then relized why she wouldnt run, there was 2 cubs way up at the top of the tree.
After a few good shots and a video the bears came down and walked into the woods.
Was really cool to get a chance to see that.

This morning Erwin was bitten by another dog, he got a few bites in but ended up with a hurt left fron leg. Didnt relize it at the time but Erwin had two bloody bite (teeth) marks on the leg and was limping 3 miles later. I checked him over and it looks okay, will be carry'n his food again for a few days. Bummer, my pack was getting lighter :) !

All else is good, hope you all are doing well.

WoooHooo, cought my first Copperhead a few days ago!!! My camera broke the night before but Peanut got a great shot of me holding the snake. Copperheads sure are pretty, this one had perfect marking but was bad tempered like all the rest!

Erwin hurt his leg and might be off the trail, he is not handling the heat well at all either. Hudson has gotten big, looks like a short legged horse now, not sure if he will be joining me either, might be dogless the rest of this trip :( .

Going to work on Trail Journals page now, have fun ya'all and keep on hiking! Hope to see you out there.

Oh yea DoggieBag and crew - read your entry at the shelter pass Front Royal. Tooo bad you cant read what I wrote in response... Hahahhahahahaha.. might be worth a hike back out there to read it or maybe i just want you to sweat your ba!!s off heading back there for nothing! Catch ya later buddy and keep those photo shoped pics comming!

I am going to try and put up photos on my Trail Journals in about an hour or so.

wrongway_08
06-08-2008, 20:32
Oh yea Erwins leg from the dog bite was fine the next day.

lets not have no dog hat'n going on, dogs will be dogs and sometimes they just dont get along. The other dog owner did nothing wrong and his (all well as all other dogs I have seen on the trail) did not bother or attempt to bother other hikers or wild life.

Well looks like I might be limited to doing trail magic for other A.T. hiking dogs for the next 1165 miles.

He's doing pretty good time if he's crossing through the Delaware Water Gap. I guess he's deep in New Jersey by tonight. I'm checking the pictures you uploaded - you do know that you could rotate those pictures that are sideways even after you've uploaded them right? When did he leave Maryland after dropping his pooch off? I'm figuring out his average miles going through that area. Thanks for the update.

That reminds me, one of your videos looked like you videotaped a youtube movie by pointing your camera at the screen... You can use this program to convert any format to any format, including .flv

That's the problem with uploading an original file to youtube it turns the original *.avi into flash. So when the original file got deleted ... I was pretty much out of luck. I'll check out your utility. Thanks. I've got most of my hikes in flash ... this could help in cleaning up the files. I was waiting for youtube to come up with something.

Pretty cool, if you know what you're doing. I like seeing snakes.

As a kid we used to catch green and black snakes. Had a buddy once catch a small copperhead, he kept messing with it till it bit him in the arm.

His forearm swoll up to the size of a football, his right hand is almost useless today.

I get the impression you're really enjoying this hike, keep on trucking Wrongway.

Wooooo Hooooo, having an awesome time, sitting at Sasquatch's right now. Going to BBQ and then hit the mall for some DEET - because the damn bugs are unforgiving out here!

What a great time we are having here, food, showers, food, sleep, showers, food, food, .......... relaxe, food :)

Should be heading north again Monday afternoon, will be camping around RPH Shelter that night. (plans changed and we got picked up 20 miles early then planned)

Well, you all have a great time, talk to you hopefully in the next town stop - maybe I'll have my June journal rewritten by then!!!

Well after almost a full 48 hrs off trail Wrongway, Loveboat and Peanut are back on the trail just south of the RPH shelter in NY. Last night Ellie also joined us while hanging out at my place. They are fed, have clean clothes and showered. I am sure that it stayed that way for the first hour on the trail. Hot and humid today.

Hey Dak I told him about you saying that you'll try to make the Sept Parade O'Fools trip he is excited about the prospects of this. He's still heading north should be into Mass in the next day or so. There was a great episode a few days ago with a garter snake with a major attitude, it really got after him. I want to say all i could do was laugh but I did manage to help by poking the snake as it was bitting him as well. At least I said I though that would help make it let go, didn't really seem to help much.:-?

Thanks Sasquach,
Awesome to hear. Look forward to meeting you guys.

And Rick, we had an 8 foot black snake that guarded our fort when I was in 3rd grade. It moved in after we had the thing built. Guess it thought we were ok. (it never bothered us) But, whenever anyone else came by it would chase them down. It was hysterical to see/ hear these kids running away. (how many people do you know of who had a guard snake?)

Oh yea... Rick, I'm getting a SECOND mtn bike today. You can use them whenever you want. Either so you don't have to haul yours back and forth from work, or for the imp who convienlently 'forgets' theirs so they don't have to go riding with you <g>. You can tell them yours is only 5 miles away, and act like they are yours. Only thing, the Trek can be for anyone else to use. Minor things are covered by the Bike Doctor. The other (better) one is just for you or me to use. (picking it up today). and, trails leave from right behind my house. :^D
see ya soon.

Sitting in Dalton, did a big 3 mile day to get here! Will do a real zero tomorrow!

My Hubba Hubba started leaking in the corners????? Have some of the good seam sealer, takes 12 hours to dry but the junk works great.

The hostel has a dog mix like my dog Hudson (Pitbull/Lab) and it turns out my dogs not fat - just growing into his normal self! He is going to get BIG! Not too tall, like hip tall but really WIDE!

Not much new, everything is going okay and I am still having a lot of fun. Nothing hurts, not hungry, not wet, not too dry, great hiking weather, bugs are dying off a little :) :) :) ! !

The replacement pack ULA sent me is awesome! Fits better then the first one and seems to carry the load better. Guessing the first one had a flaw in it. Thanks ULA for sending the new one out - you guys rock!

Finally wore out 2 pairs of socks, they went pretty much at the same time, 1,600 miles is decent for wearing them every other day! SmartWool will be my pick for socks for here on out.

Deet has worked great for the bugs, I get the 100% bottles and coat myself morning and then again in the afternoon - last untill I go to bed.

Taking heated showers at the shelters now. I boil a pot full of water and then dump it into my Platypus, mixed with 1 liter of cold water and it turns out perfect! Hang Platypus from a tree, strip down, hose down, soap up and hose off - man it feels great and I dont stink myself outta my tent :) !!!!!!

Okay done my ramble, safe hiking everyone!

everything is ggod, the dog is sitting at home, relaxing with Hudson (my other dog).

Sitting in a hotel in Vermont, about 10 miles past the border. Rained a lot yesterday, so everything is wet.

I am using the ULA Circuit now, the Go-lite Jam 2 held up fine and I will be ising it for 2-3 day trips, but decided to get something a little bigger for this hike so everything wasnt packed so tight.

Well 580 miles or so to go, sucks... the end is near.....going to take as long as I possibly can...... dont want the trip to end!

Thinking of buying a enduro motorcycle at one of the dealerships in Maine to drive back home with.... kind of a "treat" for completing this trail!

Big thanks to Tinker for heading to the trail and taking us out for lunch, it was nice to catch up with you!! Thanks, the food was great and the company better!

Sasquatch, I have a few painted toenail photos with some outlooks in the background for the kid! Thanks again for the hook-ups and helping out Love Boat with his travels.

Hope everyone is doing great and finding time to hike... catch ya later,

- There is a great sandwich shop around the corner, great price and awesome food!
- Doing a zero today and then heading out in the am on Thursday.
- Hopefully meeting Tinker on Saturday in Hanover.
- Checked out the 2009 Kawasaki 250 Enduro bike at a motorcycle dealership down the road. Looks like that or the Yamaha 400 Enduro, not sure, have 480 more miles to decide on which one to get. The 250 seems more set up for jumping the big jumps and hard offroad riding but the 400 is a little more $$$ price smart over-all. Both have good power to keep up with traffic and to go airborn when its time to hit the dirt.
- Not sure what else to do today, there is a ink shop across the street - maybe a little piece of artwork before leaving Thursday? We'll see....

- Happy hiking, be safe, take care.......

Glad you got to Hanover. Autumn (Bike SPO) said you're 'amazing' and that it's 'awesome' what you're doing.
Things around here have been interesting. Getting the a/c fixed, finally. knocked down an extra couple more trees. Got the extra mtn bike. Helped alert the feds to a possible pedophile. and am now friends with the special agent, who might join in on the Sept trip (though, his wife probably can't make it). Picked up another over-sized rocking recliner. And am in the process of taking apart a 24' pool for here for next year. (I love the trading site... free pool!!)

And, have to ask... what's your favorite and worse parts of the trip so far ?

Dak.

wrongway likes hiking at night...in the nude. he scared a few moose the other night, stumbling around in a thunderstorm and yelling something about 'the gold coin is mine! i spotted the swamp donkey!'- we barred the door at the firewardens cabin and huddled in the corner until he left...it was a truly eerie experience...but other than that one strange event, i think he's a swell guy.

When you see him next remind him that the Dr. said if he quits taking all his meds at once people may start to keep their distance and think he is a bit strange. Also remind him that the live stock molestation laws are harsher in New England than they are along other parts of the trail. You know the last time with that sheep when we asked what he thought he was doing he said "Mutton"

yea yea... definitely a cop out of an answer.... (hmmmm.... LOL) THAT does explain alot :D

Got your LAST box ready to send to Caratunk. (would have sent it today, but, slept in and it felt GREAT) I hope everything in it will be exactly what you need for your trip home. I definitely put alot of thought into it. (since you don't like saying what you want <eg>) Don't be too mad at me for it. <mwahaha>

Dak.

Oh... and your last clue...... Post-It's™ were used in the design. and I think I settled on the color blue... though, I know black works for you, too. And, if I were doing it for me I'd probably use a green.

Figured it'd be good for the trip back. Hope it's fitting. You ARE still getting that bike, right ? ::whistling innocently:: Hope you have fun. Talk to you when you get back. So much for a new Jeep. (at least from Annapolis). Went by there today 'cause the passenger seatbelt won't retract. I'm within mileage (it's nice living 5 miles to work), but, about half a year out of the time (3 yrs). You know they didn't even want to try to help ? The guy I bought 2 (!!!) Jeeps from simply said, "nope". I simply walked out. I did let them know I was in the market for another vehicle after that. But, would NOT be back there. (and you call me an idiot) LOL I want a second of some sort. Am ordering blue belts for Raven. If I have to get new ones they might as well go with the rest of the interior.

Been a great trip, met lots of cool hikers. Sucks that the end is near, only a few days, 5 or 6, left :( !

Going to miss the: friends/trail/hostels/towns/dayhikers/food/animals (snakes!)/fires every night/sounds of birds, frogs, other things that sing us to sleep every night and the knee, leg, shoulder, foot pain! :)

A big thanks to everyone that has lent a hand, help with transportation, places to stay, stayed a night out on the trail, sent cards, made phone calls/pms & emails, drive to the doctors, allowed us smelly arses to swim in the indoor pool, painted my toenails - voted best looking toes on the trail - , brought out food & drinks, stopped by to say hello, text a few kind words and everyone that - even if you thought it was crazy :D stupid - supported me thru-hiking!

This will be the last time I get to write untill the thru-hike is over, guessing untill I find my way back home.
I might jump back on before leaving Saturday morning, if no ones using the computer here.

My son and I were on our way down from the summit of Katahdin (after my 100 mi. wilderness trip) when we met Wrongway and Peanut just before going over what I consider the new "edge of the world" from the Table land down through what might be considered a vertical Mahoosuc Notch on the AT (Hunt Trail). By far it was the toughest single climb (even more as a descent) on the AT in New England. I now have completed the Trail through New England and Georgia. I still have a bit to do! :).
Peanut and Wrongway were so much fun to be with the few times I met them on the trail. They were like a true brother and sister, kidding with each other and being just a little cruel (in a nice sort of way). From what I've read, Rick went out of his way to help (and amuse) others numerous times on his trip.
Congrats to both Wrongway and Peanut.

Finally got home!

Was a great trip, thanks to all the awesome hikers out on the trail - it was great getting to know everyone!

From the:
- 4mph hikers - who I only got to meet once :)
- the town junkies - hey thats my group :D
- the ultra-lighters, who then carry a 5 pound guitar , thanks for the fire side music guys!!!!
- the bird hunter, yet another great use for Leki poles!! I wont name you but man that was some funny *****! Oh yea and the trout sandwich - bet next time you will gut/cut the head off before making that sandwich again  !!! MMmm,MMMmmmm.......good!!!
- the group that built 6 foot fires, another one of my groups! It was like having 24 hour daylight!
- all the hikers who hauled 60 pound packs the whole way....my hats off to you, that wouldve killed me!
- all the thru-hikers I met, without all the great differences in hikers, the trip would not have been half as fun!!! :sun

*******Thanks to all the Whiteblazers here, you helped me out during the trip, finding places, dropping mail drops, sending cards, texting/calling, giving great information on spots along the trail, allowing me to stay at a few of your homes and driving me to town, stores and your homes! You all rock!!

Well the summit day was great, we pushed up a day early - due to a weather forcast and boy were we happy with that decision!!! clear skies, light breeze, sun, great view of the surrounding mountains, able to meet the first half of our group who pulled ahead so they could summit in the early am that day and as a bounus we got to see Tinker and his son on their way down .

The group ended up going to Gorham, where we ate breakfast, Uphill headed home on the bus, Peanut and I got a ride from a delivery guy (not going to mention names incase his boss happens to read this), he drove us on the rest of his route and then dropped us off at the Kawasaki dealership.

A few hours later I left with a KLX 250 to drive home on. While driving it around town to "break in" the engine, it rained - hard! the temp tag fell of, so I had to write a new one on a chunk of cardboard!! Sorry Sasquatch - the dealership didnt send me off with that crappy loking tag!

On the way home I dropped Sasquatch a line and crashed at his place.
Got to meet his new puppy, Hank, awesome puppy! Well mannered, he is going to make a great trail dog!! *****On a sadder note, his attack chicken is no longer at his house, it has been relocated to another house - so it now has other chickens to play with. ********* I hope Sasquatch didnt move it to a "safe house" due to my threat of stopping by and BBQ'n his attack chicken for a snack on the way home!!! :D

The rest of the drive was nice, funny thing, my bank decided that my 5 gas purchases of $4.00 during the ride home was enough cause to "red flag" my bank card and put a hold on it!!!......................... Never mind the last 6 months of weird hostel stays along the East coast, that wasnt good enough cause to "red flag" the card, it wasnt untill after spending all that money on hostels, food, gear and other strange crap that they decided the 5 times I spent $4.00 on gas going home was "red flag" material  :) , its good they try to stop thieves - I just found it funny when they decided to finally stop my "thief" :D!

- Have a great night, will write more later!
