View Full Version : Use of tick collar on humans

I got an answer to a question I posed here a while ago--the reason it is not safe to use tick collars on people while it is safe on animals (usually) is the sweat differential-- dogs and cats do not sweat. Therefore a tick collar should not be worn, for example, around the ankle over bare skin.
It does seem, however, that it is safe to use one if there is no pathway to the skin (such as over a boot, or somesuch).
Dessertrat,
The active incredient is absorbed into the dog's skin... so the instructions will tell you to put it on 24 hrs in advance. So it is a systemic poison...
The insecticide wouldn't spread through your boot. I think permethrin on your boots, as a contact insecticide would be a better idea.

Another reason to not put one on, it might make you bark at the moon.
Or you might get the urge to lift your leg sideways when you have to go.
Or run up to people and sniff people in a socially unacceptable area of their body. (But then again whatever floats your boat…)
I would just use Permethrin, it works great and is safe when used as suggested on the can.

We got to see some wonderful photos of people who did just this while getting ready to deploy to Iraq. Lets just say that getting kicked squarely in the balls looks as if it would be less painful.

I think the real gist of this thread is how to keep ticks off
of you.
One thing that I have noticed when I go in the woods is that when
I wear high boots or knee high gaiters, both of which I treat with
permethrin, then I dont get ticks as often as when I didnt.
I have an unproven hypothesis that heavy clothing on the
lower extremeties in and of itself is a deterrent to the ticks
ability to sense your warm blood as well as if you were unprotected.
I have had people try to argue me down on this-my suggestion is
to try it for yourseld and see.
I also treat my cap and shirt collar as well which seems to help
alot.I know two people wiped out with LYMES and it is a bad
thing.
OFT
I have not ever had a tick bite when wearing my Ex Officio Buzz-Off pants.
95% of the ticks i pull off me are when i'm working under or hanging out around pine trees. so as tempting as they are for campsites, i try my best to stay away from them. i think the little bastards are just sitting up on the branches and dive bombing me

We have a lot of ticks and red bugs where I live. It's not uncommon to find 10 on you after a short walk.
Spray a little around your long pants knee to cuff and belt line. That usually does it. If the folage is taller than belt high spray accordingly. Deet seems to do it.
Hiking a couple of weeks ago in the Foothills (NC/SC) I treated my boots, socks, pants legs to about knee high, and bottom few inches of my tent with permethrin. I used nothing on my skin.
The dog stays on Frontline, had her legs sprayed with Frontline spray, and wore a tick collar.... (the vet's recommendation to do all three.)
I didn't pick up a single tick. The dog had eleven ticks in four days... one dead one attached between her toes, and no others attached. (I checked her morning, noon, and night.)
A pretty good vote for permethrin on clothes.

One group of hikers told me the count was 8 and 22 or some such. I asked what they were talking about. They said they'd seen eight other hikers and 22 ticks.

Does permethrin come in hiker-friendly pump bottles the way DEET can be bought? If there is, I'd like to know about it. I would love to have a practical way to carry permethrin to use on my lower gaiters during warm weather, especially in PA-NY.

Gee Nick,
Maybe I was being to subtle for you.:D
Don't wear the tick collar!
Dessertrat said he knew why it shouldn't be used on human skin, and I told him why it wouldn't work on a boot, and suggested permethrin instead. (and I just figured I'd get flamed by anti-permethrin folks!)

Permethrin on clothing and Sawyer's Broad Spectrum (formerly "Sawyer's Gold", DEET + R-326 fly repellent + MGK 264 synergist) on exposed skin. Works for me. No ticks or black fly bites on trail or golf course.

What if you don't wear a tick collar and already have those urges?
Then you probably don't have to worry about being run over by a truck, cuz you may never leave the house.
