It's about 18-20" long and had a yellow stripe along the back as seen in the photo. It actually stepped in between my feet as I was hiking. I didn't notice it until my hiking buddy let out a shout. I'm guessing it's non-poisonous.

Give you a nasty bite.
I have to run them out of my wood duck boxes. Also had one try to get in the boat one time.
Aggressive if cornered.
Harmless and a good rat snake.
I've had to run them out of the chicken house too. They love eggs.

It is a garter snake and they can give you a nice nip when cornered. However, they are rarely aggressive without provocation and seem to just ignore humans for the most part - as evidenced by their habit of crawling right between hikers' feet.

Thanks for the confirmation.
OMG run! It's the dreaded toes snatching northern garter snake.
