Is there anyplace to park at VA Rt42? I got dropped off here in a snowstorm in the dark and I don't remember seeing a place to spot a car.

This information is from an old guide; you may want to confirm. On the topo this part of 42 is called the Blue Grass Trail. I'm not certain as to why.
Parking on VA 42, 18.4 miles west of I-77, is available at USFS parking lot on the east side of O’Lystery Community Picnic Area.

I think we may be looking at two different places? The RT42 I am referring to is in Newport, VA (Sinking Creek Valley I think). It's the first road after the Laurel Fork Shelter. It would be east of I77, off of Rt 460.

VA 42 after Laurel CREEK shelter
From old guide:
After crossing VA 42, AT descends driveway and turns left to cross stile. (Hikers may park vehicles along side of driveway but must not block either driveway or farm lane in front of stile.
Appalachian Trail Parking, below, has no mention of any parking on 42.

Thank you. I read there's a church near there too, I'm going to try giving them a call and see if they might allow parking there. From the AT Database
The pavilion on the Level Green Christian Church property is closed to overnight camping. The former ATC regional office in nearby Newport, Va., has moved to Blacksburg, Va., farther from the Trail

btw: less than one mile south of the church on the AT, is where I encountered my first bear. He was a granddaddy of a bear.

Sounds good, I'm only going out for a night with my son.
