I'm probably going to be very UN Ultralight by taking my Nikon D40x, but that doesn't mean i can't try to save weight on the tripod.
I've seen the string and washer method and my trekking pole converts to a monopod, which while both seem useful, i don't think either will work for with a long exposures for shooting scenery.

Any thoughts?

There's a little plastic thingy called the "Ultrapod" -- weighs about 2 oz, costs about $15. I carried one last summer and even used it a few times. Three short (4") plastic legs, ball head, and -- most useful of all -- a length of Velcro with which you can attach it to fence posts, railings, etc.

The other option @ 1.6 oz. is the Joby Gorillapod (http://www.rei.com/product/742238).

I received this item as a birthday gift recently. So far, I am very pleased with it. More versatile than the ultrapod IMO.

There are no REI's in New Orleans, but I got my Gorillapod at Best Buy. Around ten bucks and no shipping costs. Beats the heck out of balancing the camera on a rock for a self portrait.

I've had an ultrapod for a lot of years - holds up well. There's also a gizmo out there that screws onto a nalgene bottle and uses it a a weighted base.

With the Gorrilapod you can also wrap the legs around tree limbs, fence post etc. to get a different angle. From my experience you need to wrap it really tight or make sure there is a bumb or something in the wood that will keep it from slipping down. Overall it is a great ultralight tripod.

There are three different Gorillapods. The smallest and lightest is good for a tiny digicam, but you'll probably want the next size up for a D-40. The way the legs wrap around things is the best feature.

I also have an Ultrapod but actually carry the Gorillapod.

the ultrapod seems a bit lighter than the next size up gorillapod i'll be needing. Camera weighs about 1.5 pds.

I like the ultrapod, but it is too small for a D40x. I would recommend the joby gorillapod SLR. If you want to use a large lens, then you may want to go with the joby gorillapod SLR-zoom.

Love(ed) my gorillapod until I lost it south of Monson last year. Anyone seen it? :)

I second all recommendations for the gorillapod. I have the SLR version and it is great!
