Guess what I just found today? Canned Bacon!

I can see this being a positive for those mail drops where you just want to get back on the trail. Frankly, just thought it was funny really.

Here's the link http://www.mredepot.com/servlet/the-364/Yoder’s-Celebrity-Canned-Bacon/Detail

That first picture of the bacon out of the can sure gets my appetite going...that's for sure.

I just looked and they also have canned real butter (http://www.mredepot.com/servlet/the-76/red-feather-canned-butter/Detail) and canned cheddar cheese (http://www.mredepot.com/servlet/the-215/kraft-bega-canned-can/Detail). Only bad thing about the butter is they say it is equiv to 3 sticks (3/4 lb). I could easily eat 8 oz of cheese in one sitting though. I would have to say weight wise this stuff would be heavy, but taste wise would have to beat dehydrated or freeze dried.

I guess this stuff would be good for mail drops, but:

Precooked bacon is available in grocery these days (very light and does not have to be kept cold). I'm thinking it would taste better than canned.

Olive oil is more versatile than butter and keeps well. If you have to have butter, it also hikes well up to a week in my experience - margarine is good even longer.

Hard cheeses (http://www.cheese.com/texturesstep2.asp?Textures=hard) and most semi-hard cheeses (http://www.cheese.com/texturesstep2.asp?Textures=Semi-hard) also do well out of the fridge for the sort of periods between AT resupplies and are definitely better than canned cheese.

I'd have to wonder - - just how long does it last once the can is opened and the air hits it?

I have eaten canned bacon many years ago what I remember most was it was really salty.Didja check the ingredients list:

"Pork, Water, Salt, Sugar, Smoke Flavoring, Sodium Phosphates, Sodium Erythorbate, Sodium Nitrite"

I'm willing to bet this product's pretty salty, too. Lots of sodium in there. That said I'd chow down if I had too, but I'm also going to do my very best to make sure things don't come to that.

We used this product during my boy scout days 40 years ago. It had a good taste and it was salty... but it was bacon and we were hungry after several days on the trail. The can has a shelf life of forever if it is unopened but you need to use it all when you break the seal.

Enjoy!

My blood pressure went up just looking at the ingredients.

Talk about a blast from the past. I took canned bacon on one of my first hikes almost 40 years ago. I also took canned ham. As I recall they both weighed about 5 lbs each.

At over $9.00 per can I think I'll pass.

Years ago I use to buy the Celebrity canned bacon at Kroger. It was very salty, almost to the point of not pleasant to eat. But I use to rinse it in a bowl of hot water a few times and it took a lot of the salt taste away. Rinsing it made it like regular bacon. But today with the pre-cooked bacon selling for $4.00 and being very light weight, and easy to use, it’s the way to go.
