Preak,

You hike too fast!

I told my dog last time on the Foothills that she'd enjoy hiking with you! (I really did mention it to her.):D

Gee, maybe you don't hike too fast, I just go too slow?

July hiking in SC is hard core.
Maybe rafting the Chattooga would be a cooler option.

Hiking the Foothills in July would be good way to shed some pounds...you'd melt !
Seriously...I wouldn't mind trying it in the summer and it would be a viable weight loss program.

I'm about to hit the Foothills Trail in a couple of weeks to do the whole trail over 9 days. * hiking and one zero day in the middle. The temps are supposed to be like low 90's in the day and around 60 for the low at night. Will definately be a bit warm!

Hit the Foothills early, you might see me and my partner. We'll be finished by July 2nd though.

Anyone got any advice for great camping locations, swimming, etc???

I am thinking of doing the Chattooga River hike from Burrells Ford road up to Ellicott Rock with my son in a few weeks. He loves to trout fish so I figure we can take a good slow trek up through there, fishing as we go a little and then fishing around the camp.

I've got two questions about it though. Anyone know how far it is from Burrells Ford up to Ellicott Rock and will a GA fishing license permit me to fish in the river since it is the state line? Thanks!

Less than 5 miles.
SC honors GA permit. Don't know the other way round.
Rules and regs should be on line.

i have done this hike before. i am a bit fuzzy on details. i remember leaving burrells ford and hiking north all the way until the trail crossed the river, and the other side there was a sign that said something about ellicot rock trail. i dont think we went all the way to ellictot rock. i do know that ellicot rock is the corner where GA, SC, and NC borders meet.

tons of dank camp sites, plenty of fishing spots.

i would assume a GA license would be legit, but cant say for sure. I do know that Burrells ford and most of the trail to ellicot rock are on the SC side.

plenty of major streams, usually there are real good spots near the streams.

There is a special tonight on the outdoor channel at 8PM.
Trout fishing the Chattooga.
It's that or the Pink Floyd tribute on VH1C.

The heat might be "only" in the 90s, but so will the level of humidity.

Have fun! :banana

no kidding. just got back from CO where it hit 75 during the day, but it felt more like 55 because it was 10% humidity

Just got back from the my Foothills Thru-hike. Don't know the exact temps but it had to be around 88-90 degrees, with high humidity. The last couple of nights were cool in the early morning between 4-8 AM. Sleeping wasn't much of a problem, but hiking in the daytime was killer. We hiked for 3-4 hours in the morning then stopped by a nice watering hole like the Whitewater river, Toxaway creek, the Horsepasture river, etc. in the heat of the afternoon. We'd swim, bath, eat lunch, and fish till around 3 PM then hike up till7-7:30 PM then camp. We probably drunk twice the average water we expected. It seems like all we did was look for water and pump. It was still fun though!!

Have you thought of writng down your adventure? Maybe posting a few pics?
That area is my favorite.
Next time I'm up there I want to look for a route to the lower Whitewater falls. The viewing area is nice but it looks like there is a cave just before the water goes over.

Thanks for the compliments on the photos.

Mercy- The water was way low. Apparently (you may know) there is supposed to be water access at Canebrake......well you'd have to drag your boat about 1/4 mile to hit water! You can really see how bad the drought is when you see Jocassee from Sassafras (I think).

Trip report on the way soon, I am just feeling sooooooooooooooooooo lazy!!! Give me some time!

Lake Jocassee was low when I hiked last, but the low water I was looking at were the photos of the creeks and waterfalls. Upper Whitewater Falls even!

Did you go to Hilliard Falls? Hope it was flowing!

Hope you find a fast-hiking partner for your trip!

Yea sorry Phreak!!! I'd like to do it again maybe next spring or something. If you don't go this year let me know maybe we could do it then.

Mercy- We got to the Hilliard Falls Spur trail and decided to pass on it as we were ready to hit camp. I've never been on the FHT before so I didn't notice that the rivers and creeks should've been higher. How deep are the in a good season?

No problem. I hike the FHT 2-3 times a year, so give me a shout anytime anyone wants to hike it.
