7 things that'll be sure to start a ruckus?

1. Defend your right to be anywhere with your dog.
2. Tell folks that a gun is needed on the A.T.
3. Make the argument that we need more Trail musicians.
4. Tell us what you REALLY think about bibles in shelters.
5. Inform us that Benton MacKaye advocated speed hiking.
6. Come here frequently to give advice on how to steal or not pay for stuff.
7. Tell us why REAL thru-hikers insist on being southbounders.

That's just a start.....

His comedy spanned several generations over many years. He was not afraid to say what he really meant. He adapted his comedy over that years and was still "right on". He may be gone but his comedy will live on through tape and all of the comedians that he influenced.

1. Defend your right to be anywhere with your dog....

"Your right," you say?! Ain't no such right. LOL

May George rest in peace, even if we can't. A real honest, upright guy.

"Religion convinced the world that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And there's 10 things he doesn't want you to do or else you'll go to to a burning place with a lake of fire until the end of eternity. But he loves you! ...And he needs money! He's all powerful, but he can't handle money! [...] I've begun worshipping the sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the sun. It's there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, a lovely day. There's no mystery, no one asks for money, I don't have to dress up, and there's no boring pageantry. And interestingly enough, I have found that the prayers I offer to the sun and the prayers I formerly offered to God are all answered at about the same 50-percent rate. [...] Religion is sort of like a lift in your shoes. If it makes you feel better, fine. Just don't ask me to wear your shoes. And let's not nail the lift to the natives' feet."

For what it's worth, Carlin was one of the first comedians I heard as a kid and consiously remember being funny. I'm glad that I heard his 7 words, it shaped my view of comedy. Rest in Peace, George. You'll be sorely missed and can never be replaced.

Like B0BE, for example...unless you cheat and use a zero, like I just did. ;)

'SloggerI'll second that. I saw him over 10 years ago in the tiny Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium here in Upstate SC. He gave 110% and had a ton of new material while throwing a bit of the older stuff out with a fresh perspective. His style and delivery was top notch and transcended each decade his career covered. He will be missed.

I think what made Carlin special/different to me is that he truly didn't give a rats ass what anyone thought. He put it out there straight and crude. His humor was a product of the 60's. His apparent "defiance" was in large part due to the policital betrayal of the country during that era.

Funny thing to me is that a lot of Americans cringe at Carlin's directness and honesty because he chooses to use words that many call "dirty" and yet that same subset sit and soak up lies from politicians because they use "perfect" and "accepted" english.

As Carlin would always say ...C'mon folks, they are only words !!

Maybe it's my age or sense of irreverence and contempt for the establishment based on the 60's . Carlin is gone but I sure hope someone with his brand of "in your face" directness steps up to the plate. God, we need it !!

It was much more than that. Lots of folks don't give a rat's ass what anyone thinks.

Ever hear of fellow South Carolinian Stephen Colbert?! He's as obliquely direct as they come. Love 'im!

Carlin's brand of comedy was in your face and he talked about drugs. Laid it right there on the table for us to look at.

One comedian that reminds me of that is Carlos Mencia. His comedy is 180* away from political correctness. He lays racism right on the table and makes us look at it.
