View Full Version : Looking for Jake Brake
I ran into a older hiker (70 I think) that used the name Jake Brake hiking from Fontana to NOC last week. He hiked the trail in 05 ( I think). He gave me a card and as usual, it got destryed in the washer. Can someone help me locate him? He lives in SC I think
I remember Jake Brake and Low Gear, but don't have any info... so no help. But I don't think he was that old.... more 60ish.

I think I have a photo of him posted in my gallery on here. Met him and his wife Low Gear in '05 at Mollie's Ridge Shelter on 4-4-05. Also met Red Hat there.
My notes say Jake Brake and Low Gear were from Indiana.

You can sign the guestbook on his Trail Journal--or---as Hikerhead says--pm or email him on WB---just go to Members List and do a search for Bill Strickland.
Hope this helps.

She's right, he's a member here under Bill Strickland, not Jakebrake.

This post is so timely. What's a jake brake? I've been down south for a couple-3 years now (born and raised in NY). I travel throughout AL, GA, MS, and TN. Just yesterday I started seeing road signs in MS warning about fines for "jake brakes". Again, what are they?
Its a engine brake on tractor trailer trucks

And they are loud on some trucks. When I used to drive a truck, I used to love to hear them, especially at night on a lonely road!

Thanks, now I can act like I already know what a jake brake is. There are 3 other things down here I also never saw up north:
1. Runaway truck ramps
2. Fried gizzards
3. Sweet tea
Runaway truck ramps Its a road almost at the bottom of a hill off to the right with soft sand and crush rocks marble size truck goes it that and starts to sink in to stop it if it don't there is a steel rail fence at the end that will do it driver and all

Sweet Tea is civilization.
