A Florida teen lost an arm in a battle with an alligator..I think there's a link to that story on the MSNBC page linked above

Common knowledge when bathing and shaving outdoors in cougar country, never leave your false teeth next to a running water tap.

Regardless of how much meat is available at the market, humans aren't always at the top of the food chain.

"...the officer found the door to the mobile home open, the water running, and Nawojski's false teeth on the table."

Damn, did the cougar go in the home and drag him out? Talk about lions at the gates...

[Knock-knock] Who is it?

Flowers.

Flowers for whom?

Plumber, ma'am.

I don't need a plumber. You're that clever cougar, aren't you?

Um, guys, a lot of folks who frequent Whiteblaze will be hiking in New Mexico at some point in their lives.

Am I the only one here who doesn't think this thread is particularly funny?

Or to put it another way, if it was your dad or son who got killed while on a hiking or cycling trip, would you be cracking jokes about it?

Thank you Jack. I happen to agree. Or how many of you believe the lion is more afraid of you than you are of them? When we were in Argentina "pumas" were numerous and one walked right into our camp. The guide kept saying "pumas never hurt anyone! They don't bother people." Sorry, but I'm from the western US and "pumas" "cougars" or whatever else you'd like to call them absolutely DO attack humans - joggers, campers, small children, women - whoever they think they can grab. I was hiking with a relative (male, larger than me) on a trail in the Sierras. The dust was deep and we spotted large (probably 4" across) cougar tracks, very fresh. We knew it was probably watching us the whole time. Being very small I would be the most likely target so I swung my hiking poles all around me constantly to appear bigger and more aggressive. My relative had been fishing in the same area one day and got that creeped out feeling, and turned to find a cougar watching him from a perch on rocks above him.

The mountain lion said during the interview, "tastes like chicken". I could not think how horrible it was for the man. Just trying to get a mad kitty kat off your arm leaves you bleeding. Animals can and do kill. Animals such as mountain lions are becoming common in a lot of areas including the southeast. In the last few weeks 3 bears have been hit by cars in Cobb county Georgia. This is a very urban area and the bears are looking for their own space. I would image that mountain lions do the same. When you live in thier play pen you need to be aware at all times.

Well Jack, that was my first thought too. But the guy was not some boy scout out on a trip under someone else's protection. He lived there by choice, must have known the risks, and yet he still left his false teeth out as a target... dang, I am doing it again.

I hope the guy is Resting In Peace. Best wishes to his family and friends.

The reason I think this thread and all the countless others like it is funny, is because if someone any where on earth, at any time dies out side, someone has to report it on Whiteblaze. Constant unrelenting fearmongering is funny. Lone Wolf and I still waiting for the man eating plants to return:welcome.

September 2006 my wife and I were in northern New Mexico for a short vacation. One morning at our B&B near Taos, we were discussing walks and hikes in the area. A young woman at our table described a hike she'd taken the previous day, and having spotted what looked like a fresh deer kill. I thought to myself... "Hmm... they just might have large cats in these woods." We ended up taking an easy walk part way up one of the slopes at the Taos ski area.

I absolutely agree dessertrat. In my dream i get carried off by a million carpenter ants screaming "The Crusher!! We have it down!! ATTTACK!!!!! and with regards to the mean kitty, i have two cats, just bring a piece of string with you anywhere you go and you can keep any cat entertained!! they use string as currency, so the bigger the better!:banana:banana:banana

I did a solo one-night backpack in Big Bend last year and you'd better believe I was thinking about cougars all the way. I hoped to see one but I figured they'd see me long before I'd see them.

This incident makes me even more wary.

You're far more likely to die from bee stings (Africanized bees) in the American SW than you are from being killed by a mountain lion. Try and keep that in mind. Personally, I like the idea that I'm not the top predator in the landscape. I hope mountain lions can be reestablished here in the east. Maybe it's happening already.

I was referring to the # of deaths from A. bees compared to cougars. However, I've been looking into it, still not able to find good #s, but I'm starting to believe it may not be too much of a stretch.

The cougar population on the east coast has been on a steady rise since about 1996, don't have any accurate info on numbers but i did see a large cat print in the Berkshires a couple months ago

Okay, Mowgli, I'm calling you out. Good natured, of course.

I've heard a cougar/mountain lion and so has my whole family on the back 40. It's not an owl, this is absolutely bloodcurtling and eerie.

Also, we have 12 black bears (as reported by the wildlife folks) in the state of Mississippi and my father-in-law and I have both seen one, a male cub as it appears, also on the back 40.

When I get pics on my game camera I'll show you. I grew up in the St.Louis area, so I know about the sho-me state. Wish me luck.:)

Perhaps you are both right. Big cats are spotted in the East, but they are all unconfirmed or found to be escaped from their rich owner's private collection.

"The felines can grow up to nine feet in length"

that's just a tad misleading, now isn't it?

...kinda like me telling people that i'm 7 feet tall ... including my vanila ice (...ice baby) high-top.

my thoughts were that not only is a man-eater on the loose, but now it's a pissed-off, wounded, man-eater on the loose. i'm sure adrenaline rush had something to do with the foul shot (i'd have prolly pee'd myself), but i surely do hope they're hot on it's tail. I mean, trail...

One can only hope that the cat died of its wounds, since if it did not, it will be very hungry in a few days, and will know what the easiest prey is.
