Greetings,
I'm about to leave New hampshire and strike into Maine. I expect to be done around July 18th and am now looking into how to get back to NYC.
I know I can hitch to Millinocket, bus to Bangor, bus to NYC.
Other than that, does anyone know of any shuttles / hitching opportunities around this time??
Cheers,
Vortex.

That sounds like your best bet, a hitch to a major town where you can get a bus, or even a hitch all the way down to NYC.
If you could hitch a ride as far as Boston, the bus from there is very cheap because of competition.
You can also take the train from Portland.
I'm not sure of any shuttles from Katahdin to NYC and hitching all that way would be difficult, unless you got lucky on the 1st one. Another option though would be to fly from Portland..
Other hikers are often a great resource. My folks picked me up from Baxter and gave a friend of mine a ride all the way to Boston (we were headed to NYC).
Worth a shot, ask around.

Hitching south from Maine is not all that difficult. I've twice made it from Millinocket to Hanover in well under a day, and there's regular bus service from Hanover to either Boston or New York.
There's also bus service from Pinkham Notch and Gorham NH; and while I've never done it, I can't imagine it's that tough to hitch from Portland, either.
