Hey everyone. I plan on leaving Monday for a 31 day hike on the appalcian trail. Do you guys have any idea where the nearest or best location for me to pick up bus service back to either Boston or New York form Catatunk, Maine? I can't seem to find anything which may put a big damper on my plan.
Thanks,

Greyhound bus (http://www.greyhound.com/home/) in Waterville, about 60 miles south of Caratunk.
Hitchike to there or hire a shuttle.

Hey there,

Do your own arrangements or get really lucky. There isn't any public transport anywhere close to the Caratunk area. Such is life in Good ol America. You'd need to get a ride to August or Waterville and then hopefully you can get a bus. I am sure it isn't too frequent.

I ended a 3-week section at Caratunk last fall. As mentioned above, you'll need to get a ride to Waterville to catch a bus to Boston. You should go to the Northern Outdoor Center (a short hitch from the trail), and ask someone at the desk if they know of anyone driving to Waterville (I would also suggest offering to pay, especially with gas prices as high as they are). I think there's a ride board, too. We got a ride from a bartender/guide who was going into Waterville the next day for a class.

There are only a couple of buses each day from Waterville to Boston, so if the timing doesn't work out right, you might have to overnight in Waterville. The bus stop is at the airport, but fortunately there are a couple of cheap motels within walking distance of the airport. Hope this helps--Caratunk is a nice place to finish up a section because you get the river crossing as your grand finale. Enjoy!

Is northern outdoors a store? If I do get a hitch is it a known place since I have no idea where it is located once I leave the trail?
Thanks,

It's a big rafting hub with a great bar and pub food. They may even let you use their hot tubs!

Don;t worry, you'll find it. There isn't much in the area. You'll laugh when you get there :)
