View Full Version : Two Person Hammock
I like the idea of being able to hang a hammock where I otherwise would be unable to pitch a tent and all the freedom and ease that you people say comes in the wonderful world of hammocks. I'd really like to try it and see what its all about. I got married shortly after I began hiking and think that I may be destined to tent for the rest of my days. I don't particuarly have a problem with that, but it has me wondering whether or not there is such thing as a two person hammock out there, and, if so, is it decent and feasible, or is it a silly idea and should I therefore just resign my self to never seeing what this hammock thing is all about. Assume for the purposes of this discussion that seperate sleeping arrangments for my wife and I are not an opition. What say those who know? Dziekuje.

There are a number of companies that offer double hammocks, but I don't think it would be comfortable for two people to be in them together. My suggestion would be buy two seperate hammocks and tarps and try to hang head end from same tree and foot end from two different trees. You may want to check out hammockforums.net as well it is load with alot of great people and information. Here are a few companies that oofer the double hammocks Travel Hammock, Treklight, Ticket to the Moon, and Eagle Nest Outfitters just to name a few.

Separate hammocks? If the honeymoon is still on you might not mind sleeping close... the sag will roll you together. It's similar to a waterbed.

Has anyone tried any of these? This is something my husband and I are interested in too.
Thanks,

Those are all quality made hammocks. Made in the same factory I do believe. I've used a couple of those brands.
Yep hanging the head ends on one tree and foot ends on separate trees is a great idea. Keeps you close but still able to sleep.

I saw two scouts sharing a double hammock, they said it was pretty rough... I think that a tent would be better even if you are married....

My daughter and I take two hammocks, tie the head end to the same tree and tie the foot end to two fairly close trees so we usually end up sleeping really close to each other. She still needs me to wake up with her to go take care of nature's call, so I try to get us close enough to touch each other without sitting up. Our last over night hang together we actually kept each other warm we were so close.

I have been researching this double hammock conundrum myself and haven't found anything that looks like it wouldn't end up with one person on top of the other. This idea involving the single tree for the head of the hammocks is a good idea and think i'll present it to the wife. I hate setting up tents while backpacking and have the problem that a lot of husbands have, wife needs to be close while she sleeps in the woods. (For that matter anywhere) I also have some questions on what you do for tarping these situations. 1 large tarp? 2 small tarps?
Real men do it standing up in a hammock!

Two tarps could be used, of course. Their size might affect how wide the separation must be. Speer (http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/Tarps.htm) shows a picture of twin hammocks under their winter tarp, with a caption of "couples take note".

We usually use one large tarp, if we even use one. Sometimes in late spring when I absolutely KNOW FOR A FACT we are in a dry spell with ZERO chances for pop up storms, I'll go tarpless. Here is a shot of our two hammock, one tarp set up early spring 2008 on Springer. As you can see the tarp is down on one side. We were 90% sure the wind we would get that night would come in from that direction. Worked pretty darned good as we both roasted that morning.

I spent 5 nights I think with another person in a hammock. Like others said you have to want to sleep really close. I wouldn't want to do this on a hot night. A cold night would be great. One half on top usually works better. I used my DIY speer. I have a ENO double that would work well. The looser the ends are gathered the easier it will be to sleep in.
A big issue for me is when one person moves both wake up. The best nights were after a bottle of Jim was shared.
