Just returned from a great, altho short, backpacking trip to the Backcountry.

I carried the Catalyst, loaded with abt. 30 pounds (I had packed water and food for 3 days), for the second time. The first time was several months ago with only 20 lbs. on. From Summit Gate we hiked down Fisherman's Trail, forded the Cranberry (quite and ordeal with big back AND barefoot!), and set up camp about 1.5 miles up the bike trail, where Dogway goes off to the right.

This is some of the most beautiful forest I have ever seen! A special treat was seeing a Golden Trout approx. 12 inces long. I had never seen one before and at first thought the fish was albino. WONDERFUL specimen.

Was VERY pleased with the dehydrated brown rice I had packed to accompany the prepackaged Madras Lentils and Jodphur Lentils (from http://www.tastybite.com/Vegetarian_Food_s/60.htm ). Found lots of black raspberries for dessert.

This morning we tried out the Java Juice which is FAR superior to the coffee sngles. We headed up Dogway for 45 minutes, to the liming station and then turned onto the old road grade heading back up to Summit gate. There was lots of bear sign--huge piles of scat and many tracks of all sizes, in the track traps. More beautiful forest! The saddest thing was the ADELGID which we had not seen before this summer in WV.

Nessmuk's metal ankle was hurting sumpthin fierce after the nearly 9 mile pull. It was gradual, but we only stopped once. SO, we did not stay for the second night.

We saw several cyclists and 6-8 fishermen. The shelters looked grungey, the one privy at Dogway, horrible. We set up our own camp with tarp. Wish we hadn't had to leave so early.

We will be back before the summer is over. The Cranberry is our favorite place--there are years backpacking and biking ahead of us there.

I strongly recommend The Cranberry Wilderness, Backcountry and the SW Monongahela to all.

Thanks. I"ll get there this year, perhaps as soon as the end of this week.

We've camped there several times. My boyfriend loves to fish. Had great trout dinners each time! It is a great place.

My sis, Frau2, has a place (intended for retirement) ion Garrett Co., just north of Oakland. We stay with her and hike the rail-trail out of Thomas, and also hike Otter Creek (be still my heart!) and Laurel Fork--also Canaan Mt. several times.

I am guessing you are near there and much closer to Cranberry than we are. We are supposed to go back before fall. I hope you and we have the same great weather as this weekend! PS--take bug spray for the flies and mosquitoes. We didn't see one tick.

Nessmuk fishes occasionally--I only fish in marine waters. Since I can hike further and longer than he (due to his old injury) I am thinking I will explore during the day, while he fishes and rests his ankle.

I'm not sure I live that much closer but at least I don't have to cross the mountains to get there as much as you do. I've only lived in Western MD (Frostburg) for a year-and-a-half but am taking advantage of all these great places. I backpacked Otter Creek in May '07 and have day hiked in the Canaan Valley. 2 weeks ago I backpacked in Dolly Sods. Last March I backpacked the Laurel Highlands Trail (http://www.trailjournals.com/cookerhikerLHT)in SW PA.

Speaking of rail trails, have you considered cycling the Great Allegheny Passage (http://www.atatrail.org/)? I live half a mile from where it passes near Frostburg. It runs 135 miles from Cumberland to McKeesport, PA outside of Pittsburgh. There are periodic campsites and B&Bs in the small towns it traverses. If you're interested in a trip of some lengh, I can shuttle 2 people cum bikes. And if you don't want to lug bikes up from your home, you can rent them from a bike shop right here in Frostburg.

Thanks for the post Frau.
Wife and I are planning to head out to the Cranberry Sept 2. Plans are to stay for about a week. ......Understand trails in the area are relatively poorly marked.....

Mdoggy,
If you go DOWN Fishermans Trail, watch carefully. You won't get stranded, but there may be an easier ford than right at the creek outlet where we ended up. The map shows the trail coming out upstream of the shelter, and we ended up downstream by a little bit. It turned out ok, just wanted to caution you.

We plan to return but are not sure when. Nessmuk is talking about the South Fork of the Cumberland State Park, but this all depends on the water levels. We might end up at the Cranberry again, which will make me happy, OR even on a week long float from Iron Gate to Snowden on the James.

Have a terrific week! For us, any week in the woods or on the river is a great week:sun
