View Full Version : Filtering water
I have developed a backyard psychologists theory that states... Persons that are obsessed with filtering and otherwise overly treating their water, are products of domineering mothers or spouses. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

They've worked as microbiologists, and KNOW how much %#&@ can be in most untreated surface water. Yes, that includes springs; if you can get the water, it's surface water now. The last guy to dip his cup in the spring might have run out of soap, wet wipes, and TP a week before...

Yep that is the chance you take when you hike. I use pills to purify the water and haven't been sick yet. We are water crazy anyways paying for bottled water.

I guess it's a question of either proving how tough you are by drinking untreated water or proving how tough you are by carrying an 11 oz filter up and down the trail. Me, I like the exercise. Mother says its good for me.

Remember, this was placed in the HUMOR section. :-? There's some tongue in cheek stuff going on folks.

Some of the posters here filter water with devices. Others filter it with their bodies. When someone goes to the privy 4x a night, every night, odds are they chose door #2...:mad::rolleyes:

I would think one of you femurous types that have graduated to dip n sip, would have a siltstopper insert tucked away in a junk drawer that you would sell cheap.

A little bacteria is good, every now and then you need to clean out the pipes

When you're all cramped up, spinning around looking for leaves, that 11 ozs. and $50, or little pills, iodine, or 11-14 drops ( per gallon, incidentally ) of household bleach will look pretty darned good. Heck, with Hep. C and giardia and imported crap all around I'd like to filter my water everywhere.

Nice ripe cool fresh fruit is MUCH more appealing a way to take care of that than Giardia. "Oh, yum" vs. "Oh, &%$#, not AGAIN! It's the 7th time this morning! &%#%&#%$*&@!!!!!"

My filter is full of concentrated nastiness. I am now more afraid to drink anything that comes out of it than from a stream.
I always use it when my wife is watching, though.
Your theory is sound.

sounds like your pickin' on #2. it's an immunity thing. you should know that. if you introduce your body to small ammounts over time it should cease to make you sick. it works well for folks who hike on a somewhat regular basis, but no so much for folks that get most of their exercise using the keyboard.

By immunity, do you mean get giardia and pass it on in your spool without symptom? Wouldn't that make you a carrier?

Else the people in the LDCs who drink untreated water all their lives would have life expectancies greater than those of the First World circa, oh, 1700. Look up "river blindness" on google sometime, see who gets it (hint: not many English speakers) and see if you want in on that.
Picking on #2. Only as a choice for me. You go do what you want, as long as you don't do it in the springs.:eek::mad: <heave> ;) "Mommy, why is the water that color?" "DON'T TOUCH IT BILLY! RUN AWAY, QUICK!"
P.S. I'm on a keyboard in my spare time while earning money for another thruhike starting in under 5 months.
ooooh, one thru hike under your belt, and planning for another. do you feel that makes you special. how much did you hike before that? how much have you hiked after that? cool, i'm glad that you made it to maine, i'm glad that you wan't to do it again, but it doesn't make you special.
I contracted Shigella on the AL Pinhoti back in April. Source looked clean, but looks can be deceiving. To each his own, but I'll stick with my purifier.

Years ago I did one of those Indian style push-ups and drank from a crystal clear pond. Stood up quite satisfied, and my buddy pointed to a fuzzy muskrat carcass about three feet from where my face was.

LW will tell you which one i am because clearly my opinion matters to only myself.:p I need to go call my mom, Yes honny i'll do the dishes in a minute.... i gotta go

Someone actually didn't know that sanitation is related to life expectancy. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_expectancy :
"..Advances in sanitation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanitation), nutrition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutrition), and medical knowledge made possible incredible changes in life expectancy throughout the world,..." [in the West in recent centuries, and elsewhere post-WWII]
And if you look up their definition of sanitation, you'll see that that primarily refers to clean water: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanitation
Some of the many diseases spread in unclean water:
amebiasis, cholera, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, typhoid, and hepatitis.

I didn't have an overbearing mother and I don't treat, but that could just be cause I'm lazy. I've never gotten sick but I'm not quite at the 16k miles of lone wolf. Although, I grew up in NJ which is close enough to get the "effects" of NY water. Maybe that made me invisible.
