Fell in love there once. Aloha lake!

Still searching aye terrapin?
The west side of Yosemite is nowhere near where your plan B trip is. (Mammoth to Lone Pine on the JMT)
You'll be fine up there.

The images at this site (http://www.weather.gov/aq/sectors/northcalifornia.php) concern me. Here's the picture as of this morning. The stretch that we're planning to do (as you know) runs just a few miles west of Bishop.

Terapin, I did a piece of the Tahoe Rim Trail about 12 years ago, from what I remember it was fantastic... lots of good campsites and wildlife, and if you get a chance to stay near Rock Lake there is the best campsite on top of a 50 foot "cliff" of rocks, and it's a nice swim:D

Yeah, I have to admit -- it lacks the allure and prestige of the JMT or PCT -- but also lacks most of the logistical problems. Too bad about all the $$ we've spent so far on PCT maps and guides. We may just flip a coin when we meet at the airport. The Rim Trail was always in the back of our minds as a safe easy option.

Prestige is for record holders and record breakers of which, I am neither. Hike your hike and enjoy either way, plus if you feel like doing more miles, just do it twice:D

Thing is, we've been to the Tahoe area several times -- for skiing -- but I've never hiked the high Sierras. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Tahoe, it's just not as exciting to me as the PCT or JMT would be. Kinda like comparing the Finger Lakes Trail to the 100-mile Wilderness, or something like that.

If you are looking in that area, I will have to go back to my original recommendation, and say go to Desolation Wildnerness, on the SW side of Tahoe.
